Jonathan Benn Tue Sep 30 20:56:00 2014
One last quick ride after a day that included 350 miles of driving and a Board meeting. Felt great to ride through the city at night. Unitl next year, ride on.
David J Clifton Tue Sep 30 20:45:00 2014
Great job coasters. @great job Mick, road bike? You will crush us all.@David was great riding with you too and everyone. The challenge may be over but still a lot of riding left.@Thomas good luck on drawings too. I truly hope everyone reached the goals they set for themselves. Just keep pedaling. :)
mick llanos Tue Sep 30 17:30:00 2014
Its been a great time riding and bonding with all of you (bikers and Coasters). Have a safe winter and hope to see everyone next year. ps. David, my road bike comes in on oct. 23. Next year Coasters RULE.

David Vogt Tue Sep 30 07:41:00 2014
Last ride of the challenge for me! It's been fun "riding" with all of you. Let the Fall and Winter riding begin. See you all next year.
Bruce Herbach Sat Sep 27 05:22:00 2014
Here it is the last week of the Challenge and I have the lowest mileage for a week since we started. Finally starting to feel better. Will put in a few miles today but still not up to my normal amounts. Hope everyone else is able to get out and enjoy the nice weather we are having and pedal a few miles.
Jonathan Benn Thu Sep 25 20:38:00 2014
@Bruce, hope you feel better. I'm suffering from work, the curse of the cycling class.
Bruce Herbach Thu Sep 25 17:00:00 2014
Last week of the Challenge and I get hit with a 24-48 hour bug. Couldn't even put in a mile yesterday. Will attempt one shortly. Far short of the 30 or so I had planned. Everyone enjoy the nice weather (at least here) and have a great ride.
Sue Epstein Wed Sep 24 09:03:00 2014
Just got back from an amazing bike trip around Maribor, Slovenia, into Croatia and a few miles around Lake Bled, Slovenia. Beautiful country!!!
Jonathan Benn Mon Sep 22 19:15:00 2014
Second time doing the "Ride the Hub" event in Boston today. Sort of a mini 5 Boro ride. A great event.
David J Clifton Thu Sep 18 13:36:00 2014
@Jonathan...great job. Its a great feeling to complete goals no matter how big or small. I hope everyone reaches the level they set for themselves in the challenge. You are all doing Great! Just keep pedaling.
Jonathan Benn Wed Sep 17 20:14:00 2014

mick llanos Mon Sep 15 08:35:00 2014

David J Clifton Sun Sep 14 11:10:00 2014
Just keep pedaling everyone your all doing GREAT!
David J Clifton Sun Sep 14 11:04:00 2014
@Mick The Coasters need you, We need EVERYONE. Sorry about the foot. Never fun when you get hurt. We still have the rest of the month. If i need to start biking double miles on monday to help you out so be it...lol You are doing great, give you huge credit for single speed bike. I have used 4 bikes for the challenge this year all of which have gears. @Bruce that is a great idea, its nice not to have to think if you put the right shoes on or not.
Bruce Herbach Sun Sep 14 10:24:00 2014
@Mick on my Surly I have the shimono SPD pedals that are flat on one side and clips on the other. Use this bike for all errands and commuting. So it doesn't matter which shoes I use. Might work for you.
mick llanos Sun Sep 14 07:03:00 2014
Maybe try flat pedals! Yes i will.. its sad i can clip in but cant clip out.. Ouch!
mick llanos Sun Sep 14 06:59:00 2014
Im out.. hurt my foot at work and cant pedal.. give it a couple of days.. maybe? Keep riding and go COASTERS!
Bruce Herbach Thu Sep 11 13:34:00 2014
@Johnathan, I did the Metric on Saturday and the Half on Sunday. Both rides were very nice. Really a great weekend.
David J Clifton Wed Sep 10 07:16:00 2014
@Jonathan great job on your miles. Always enjoyable to ride with others.
Jonathan Benn Mon Sep 8 16:50:00 2014
MHCC Century Weekend in the books. Did the half on Satrday and the Metric today. Both very nice rides.
David Patterson Thu Sep 4 22:00:00 2014
/none of my miles are transferring to Bike challenge, likely since trasfer is intially as a run! I am at the same total for 1 week, even though I have ridden & logged >150 miles!
chip braun Wed Sep 3 23:19:00 2014
Running thing get me also have to change it to cycling sport
Robert Light Wed Sep 3 19:36:00 2014
yeah that running thing gets me now too!
David J Clifton Wed Sep 3 18:43:00 2014
Last month of the challenge everyone. Hope you all get out there and ride as much as you can. I am off to a slow start but with 27 days to go I am certain to log some miles and smiles...lol . You are all doing great. Just keep pedaling and remember to have fun and enjoy the sights along the way.
Joseph Howard Wed Sep 3 08:26:00 2014
David I think that was the change they made a week ago that caused the Garmin upload to stop working. You are correct. Every upload I do I have to change the upload from running to cycling sport.
David Patterson Tue Sep 2 19:36:00 2014
Is anyone else having to edit their Garmin rides from running to riding..Every ride since the weekend were saved as running..do not seem to get mileage credit in the Bike Challenge.
Laura Lee Thu Aug 28 20:30:00 2014
@chip@jonathan thanks for input--i'll have to get in habit of swapping out
Jonathan Benn Thu Aug 28 16:18:00 2014
@Laura Slicks on single track are not safe and are pron to punctures.
chip braun Thu Aug 28 15:39:00 2014
Comuter slick non single track is a bad idea and may be dangerous.
Laura Lee Thu Aug 28 00:18:00 2014
Can any MTBers weigh in on commuter slicks being used on singletrack trails? Is it a bad idea, or do they get enough traction? Thanks!
mick llanos Wed Aug 27 05:59:00 2014
ALWAYS! THE BEST PLACE TO RIDE.. No cars to dodge.. only racoons.. my shoulder still hurts from my collision with mama racoon on saturday nite..ouch!
Jonathan Benn Tue Aug 26 20:18:00 2014
Sound of gentle rain, russle of leaves on the trail, made for a peacefull after work MTB ride. Sometimes the woods are the best place to ride.
Joseph Howard Sat Aug 23 12:26:00 2014
I just checked with the support site and it appears to be fixed. I just tried to upload and it works
David Patterson Fri Aug 22 21:45:00 2014
Past 3 days
David Patterson Fri Aug 22 21:44:00 2014
Same issue w/my Garmin 800, reads unit but won't save to site.
Dennis Uhlig Fri Aug 22 20:52:00 2014
Same problem here. Garmin Edge 500 uploads okay to Garmin and MapMyRide but won't upload here.
Joseph Howard Fri Aug 22 20:22:00 2014
Thanks Jeffrey and Chip. The reason I know my Garmin is still working is because I have no issues and am still able to upload to the Garmin site but not here.
Jeffrey d Lintz Fri Aug 22 14:27:00 2014
Yes Joseph ,
i'm having the same issue . I thought it was because my garmin got zapped by the badge reader at work Got a 500 edge , i'm uploading from a tcx file as well from garmin connect.
chip braun Thu Aug 21 20:30:00 2014
Joe mine have been up loading ok but I have an old forerunner 305
Joseph Howard Thu Aug 21 17:25:00 2014
Is anyone having an issue with uploading data from Garmin? It would have happened in the past few days. Since Monday when I upload from my Garmin edge 800 it recognizes the Garmin and detects the proper workouts to upload the then I click save it just sits there on the saving workout screen and does nothing. I have tried this on 2 different computers in 2 different locations. I contacted help and support and I got an automated email that says “First of all, thank you for using Endomondo. We're getting tons of emails every day from users around the world, which means we unfortunately don't have time to give everybody a tailor-made answer, but we hope this can help you anyway.” The only way I can upload my workouts now is after I upload them to Garmin connect export them as tcx and import the files here.
mick llanos Tue Aug 19 19:09:00 2014
Thats funny,, it says Sept 30th on this page.. DOH!! thanks for the heads up @Thomas..
Thomas M Smolen Tue Aug 19 14:38:00 2014

Congrats @mick on Diamond.
David J Clifton Mon Aug 18 18:53:00 2014
@mick hats off great job. Hard to believe challenge will be over before you know it. Maybe now you will win the big prize.
mick llanos Sun Aug 17 22:07:00 2014
Finally! Broke 5000 points..with 2 weeks to spare.. all on a single speed mtn bike.
johanna lovell Sun Aug 17 17:01:00 2014
Looking forward to my ride around the rim of Crater Lake tomorrow. I figure it will take me most of the day. Only a 33 mile ride but you have to stop at all the look outs so you can soak it all in. This place is definitely one of the wonders of the world :)
Joseph Howard Fri Aug 15 12:34:00 2014
Thanks Jonathan I was looking into getting goal zero guide 10 plus. I ended up getting a JVC Adixxion to record my rides instead.
Jeffrey d Lintz Fri Aug 15 10:30:00 2014
Hey Jonathan ,
I was able to charge my garmin with an external battery and was able to charge the external battery with an ECO X power generator. I was in deep central Quebec.
Jonathan Benn Thu Aug 14 19:10:00 2014
Used a Net Zero solar charger on SAGBRAW tour. It couldn't charge my smart phone and may have trashed my Garmin 200. Think long and hard before you get one of these for your outdoor adventures.
Joseph Howard Sun Aug 10 11:34:00 2014
Congrats @Jonathan sounds like a nice ride
Jonathan Benn Sun Aug 10 08:08:00 2014
Finished SAGBRAW in eastern Wisconsin Friday afternoon. 6 great days of riding along Lake Michigan.
Bruce Herbach Wed Aug 6 23:12:00 2014
Odd thing happened with Endomondo iPhone app today. On a short ride it just quit. Went a couple of miles before I noticed. Restarted it twice. Each time it tracked about a tenth of a mile and quit. Finally ended ride closed the app then opened it and started a new ride. It seems to be working normally since.
Bruce Herbach Wed Aug 6 06:34:00 2014
@norbiker MohawkHudson Bicycle club is currently on page 3 of the local team leaderboard for August.

norbiker prenty Tue Aug 5 09:07:00 2014
why doesn't my team (MohawkHudson Bicycle club) show up any more? We show up in Jult but not August?
David Vogt Mon Aug 4 13:03:00 2014
What a gorgeous day! Nice 50 mile ride, long one for me. Forgot to start the GPS after breakfast, I was dazzled by the brisket hash evidently. Hope everyone has a great day!
David J Clifton Mon Aug 4 08:34:00 2014
@Johanna...its truly great to bike all over the USA. To see new places and local sites truly makes biking fun.@ Robert great job in July and all your miles.@ Bruce congrats on your rides...the canal trail is wonderful and seeing NY from that perspective is truly art in the making.@Gene your doing great just keep pedaling. @ everyone....your all doing great. Look forward to seeing you all out there along the way. Exchanging bike stories and routes. Just keep pedaling and when possible bring a friend.
johanna lovell Fri Aug 1 20:05:00 2014
I have had the supreme pleasure of working in Bend Oregon this summer and I have been having an awesome time enjoying there scenic byways. If you ever get the chance come out to the west coast and check it out is all I can say. The elevations are high but the views are worth every drop of sweat :)
Robert Light Fri Aug 1 13:32:00 2014
great month in July! Lets see if we can have a Awesome August!!
Bruce Herbach Fri Aug 1 12:01:00 2014
July was my biggest month ever. Rode Erie Canal trail starting in Niagara Falls. (Dont recommend starting there) to Albany. Completed first Century on last day of ride. In all over 700 miles in one month.
Gene Connor Thu Jul 31 20:36:00 2014
I had a great time yesterday combining two of my passions - cycling and helping others as I was part of the Northport Bike Rescue Squad covering a local 5K run. When you have to sprint on a fully laden bike to get to a patient in need it makes all the training miles make sense.
Jeffrey d Lintz Thu Jul 31 15:01:00 2014
Hey Folks a great way to get some miles September 22 . OCBC Country roads out of warwick , New York , come see our beautiful county and Camels on a farm also .
David J Clifton Tue Jul 29 09:36:00 2014
@Bruce...sorry we didn't meet up. Was my first time on the FANY ride and was quite enjoyable. The people were amazing and the views of NY were incredible. Would do it again. I did more hills this past week than I did for the entire month of June. All in good fun. Thank you all for your support. Can't wait to get back out riding again.
Becky Lynn Lynn Tue Jul 29 07:44:00 2014

bruce d. smith Sun Jul 27 17:44:00 2014
Just finished the FANY ride- 500 miles across N.Y. David, Sorry we din't cross paths this week. This was my 5th FANY and the most scenic one yet. Thursday's hilly ride was a classic- my Garmin said 6666.6 feet of climbing in 74 miles.
Dennis Uhlig Sat Jul 26 21:02:00 2014
I've been thinking about riding the FANY ride. Hope your experience is a great one. Let us know how it went. Thanks..!!

David J Clifton Thu Jul 24 02:12:00 2014
@ Jonathan that's great. Have fun. Biking 500 across NY currently. Only in Cortand headed toward Saratoga. There are people from many different states on the ride including Michigan, NJ, Maryland and NY that I have met so far. Its great to hear there stories. Why do you bike? The answers amaze me. Have a great day Just keep peddling everyone. You are all Great.
Jonathan Benn Tue Jul 22 19:04:00 2014
Got the cue sheets for SAGBRAW via email today. 320 miles in 6 days along Lake Michigan. Looks like its going to be a blast.

Robert Light Sat Jul 19 17:15:00 2014
oh and I never got my points from my 95 mile ride on 7-18 whats up with that?
Robert Light Sat Jul 19 17:11:00 2014

Phyllis Richman Tue Jul 15 21:01:00 2014
Just left Quebec after cycling there for 10 days. What an amazing bike friendly area! Lots of great bike paths and drivers who really share the road. Hot even in Quebec this morning and now I am in Bar Harbor for more cycling. Hot here too. Will be heading out early to beat the heat and the traffic on the park loop drive.
Jonathan Benn Tue Jul 15 17:59:00 2014
Holy hot ride today!
bruce d. smith Sun Jul 6 13:30:00 2014
The fault line tour had about 100 riders and was well organized. The heat would have been more bearable if there had been some shade, but only Tennessee offered up a few trees here and there. The sag support was great and the hottest day I had 8 bottles of water in a 62 mile ride.
mick llanos Sun Jul 6 13:13:00 2014
Great ride Bruce..
mick llanos Sun Jul 6 12:57:00 2014
@joseph Howard.. my son went to buffalo university and i rode my bike up and down those trails.. i miss riding in and around the city.. maybe my grandkids will go to school there.. the oldest is ten.. youngest 6 months. have a great day!
David J Clifton Sat Jul 5 08:21:00 2014
@Bruce that is wonderful sounds like you had fun. How many people on the ride? I bet you drank alot of water, biking in the heat seems harder to me than in the snow.
Dennis Uhlig Fri Jul 4 21:33:00 2014
Congrats Bruce..!! Sounds like a great bike tour..!!
bruce d. smith Fri Jul 4 13:51:00 2014
Just completed the inaugaral "Ride The Fault Line" tour in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, & Kentucy. Had a great time riding in 4 states, crossing the Mississippi River on a Ferry, and camping at Reelfoot Lake which was formed by the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquake. 440 miles in one week with temperatures in the 90's.
David J Clifton Fri Jul 4 08:55:00 2014
Great miles everyone. The rain is just part of biking. Keep GPS/phone in zip lock bag to keep dry. Love the endomondo app talking to me.@Robert its great to see all the animals and just be outside. This working thing is making my biking tough, they want extra time out of me. Happy 4th of July everyone. Just keep peddling.
On the ride in this am managed to brake my rear gear cable, 24 speeds became 3...then another 8 miles in broken spoke. had to disconnect brake. At work and need to figure out how to get another 80 miles in today...lol
Robert Light Thu Jul 3 19:39:00 2014
rained on my way to work...big shock I know! Stayed dry for my afternoon ride tho, and I saw a coyote/coy-dog. I actually had my phone out and took 3 picture of it...well 1 outta 3 isn't bad.
Jonathan Benn Tue Jul 1 23:19:00 2014
57 miles in the rain on Cape Code today. Actually not all that bad...

@Gene, joining a VFD is one of the most extraordinary things you can do. I have been trying to get into my local VFD for several years, but there have been few openings and those have gone to the younger gents who have contacts within the hall. Hoping this is my year!

New bike day! Finally found a 1999 Schwinn Homegrown 4 Banger in my price range. Though it needs some love, frame and suspension is in great shape, and only needs tires, seat post and saddle to hit the trails. Fun winter project coming up for sure! Enjoy the sunshine all.

@Martha...your doing great! that is how I got back into biking, to and from work. Parking downtown adds up. Then last year during the bike challenge, started putting on extra miles to and from work, getting groceries and now I tend to bike alot, both for transportation and fun. Its great to meet other bicyclist and hear about there miles. I see far more on the bike than I ever would in a car, but yes I still own one. lol maybe someday I could give up the luxury but for now I just keep peddling whenever possible.

Well the good thing about the car being in the shop all week is I have a great excuse for riding to work each day. The bad news? The rain. Oof! However, like David I have decided to rock the Portland look and added full fenders and a rack with trunk bag to the cyclocross/touring bike. Splash on my friends, splash on. @Joseph - I found a way to get even with them. I have the Niterider 500 and on flash mode it's apparently bright enough to annoy them - at least they see me!

Let’s see I am riding to work in the rain, 60 degree temperatures soaked while this person is driving a warm and dry SUV eating and enjoying coffee had to put down their window to tell that I was in their road. Bike plans for the city of Syracuse can be found at http://www.syracuse.ny.us/BIMP.aspx. These maps show the Westside extension of Onondaga Lake connection to the creek walk and much more. Thanks @Jason appreciate the ideas. I can definitely tell I need 2 sets of wheels for different types of riding. During the week I ride everywhere I need to go on my bike so the size tires that I have work well for that for now, but on the weekend when I ride 40+ I think I would like something for more speed. My Skaneateles ride as enjoyable as it was, was tough and would have been better with narrower tires. It is funny I am putting more miles on my bike per week than I ever did in my car.

@Joseph,after looking up the Bonti CX0, any of the options listed will give you a better ride than what appears to be a dry pack, single track MTB tire. Those would be great to hold on to if you're doing some gravel grinding or early season West Coast CX racing, but for getting from point A to point B a good slick tire will give you a much more pleasant ride.
Jason G. Morgan Sun Jun 8 03:56:00 2014
@Joseph, you can certainly go down to a 700x23 tire, but if you have 34c tires now there are plenty of great rolling tires in that size that are bombproof. A few that come to mind are the Vittoria Randonneur, Fyxation Session, Continental Country Plus, and Schwalbe Marathon HS 420. In the long run a touring type tire will give you more comfort and increased life. Think about looking for something between 28-32c if you're looking for a little more speed than the 34s, but still looking to carry some gear, groceries or whatever your travels may bring!

@Robert, after 300 miles you really cant complain about the first flat. I haven't tried the Detonator, but can certainly say that Maxxis can make a bombproof 700x23-28 that doesn't feel like you're steering a tank. I honestly have a hard time noticing the difference between my Re-Fuse and a race tire in handling. The only Kenda tires I have experienced are the Kwick 700x35 that came on my single speed GT Traffic commuter. Being so used to rugged training tires, it seemed like I was always running something over and had slow leaks with them all spring, so I donated them to a neighbor and got the Contis.
Robert Light Sat Jun 7 21:29:00 2014
@Jason. I too use Maxxis, but I have been using Detonator model. This is the 1st flat in like 3000 miles. So I guess I shouldn't complaint. I just ordered some maxis and Kenda tires. (I run a small shop outta my garage.). Being that most of the weight is my the rear tire, I think you are more likely to pick up something with the rear tire. Rather flat in the rear anyways.....especially a sudden or blow out, don't have to worry so much about steering issues.

@Joseph, invest in a good set of training tires and you won't have to worry. My fear about tubeless is breaking a bead on the road and then you have no options. At least with tubes it's a quick fix and off you go. I have been using Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x23 on my road bike for years and maybe have 1 flat a season on tires with good tread. My winter/rain commuter has a set of Vittoria Randonneur Cross 700x35, and my single speed commuter just got a fresh set of Continental Super Sport Plus 700x28. All great tires that can roll through those staples, stones, road debris, and branches without a drop of concern. The factory installed tires are rarely puncture resistant.
Joseph Howard Sat Jun 7 01:52:00 2014
I agree @Jason, it is always my back tire. I had my first flat the other day as well. New Bike 3 weeks old and a small staple got me. I guess that is to be expected when you ride 100+ miles a week. The roads in Syracuse have tons of crap on them. My bike has the option to go tubeless. Has anyone used these and if so how do you think they work?
Jason G. Morgan Sat Jun 7 01:18:00 2014
@Robert, it never seems to be a front tire flat! I had my first a few months ago, in the rain. Pulled into a restaurant parking lot, changed it out and back in action. I run puncture resistant tires on 4 of the bikes and the 24" cruiser has some knobbies so I don't often have to worry about flats. But they do happen and it's good to be experienced and prepared.

1st flat of 2013! Rear tire, small, miniature spike stuck in my tire. I had just finish changing the tube and got my wheel back on when a motorist turned around and came back and asked if I needed anything. I happen to know the guy (unsure if he recognized me) he works at the College I work at. Keep the rubber side down!

@Holly There's nothing wrong with having an old bike, my road bike is steel and from the 80s. However, for your sake, bring the bike into a shop and do something about the chain and shifting. All that will do is make you miserable! And no need to worry about having bike specific clothing. It doesn't really matter unless you start riding longer distances. Happy riding!
Joseph Howard Tue Jun 3 21:05:00 2014
@Holly, any riding you do is only good if you enjoy it. With all my rides I always listen to what my body is telling me and am I enjoying myself. If the answer is no to either of these questions then I don’t ride or cut the ride short. It’s better to be on the safe side with smaller and more enjoyable rides then it is to hurt yourself on longer rides and then not be able to ride for days or even weeks. Anyways I guess what I am trying to say is good for you for riding. A famous quote I love is “Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” H.G. Wells

AND i dont even own bike shorts. but, hoping you will overlook all of that, and let me be part of the team!

Anyways I guess what I am trying to say is good for you for riding. A famous quote I love is “Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” H.G. Wells

i dont really work at mimbresman, and i barely even ride a bike, compared to you real riders. but i have to start somewhere, and this site seems like it will make it more fun, and maybe push me to do a little more. and i'm not a man, either. and my bike is 12 years old and has a rusty chain and wont go into first gear. AND i dont even own bike shorts. but, hoping you will overlook all of that, and let me be part of the team!

@Robert, awesome! I had some mechanical issues on my way home today. I installed a new cassette, chain and tires on my road bike last weekend. Have ridden about 90 miles on it since. The lock ring wasn't completely snug and apparently the lower machine screw on my derailleur hanger was loosened, causing the lock ring and hanger bolt to bind up. Fortunately, I was able to replace the lock ring with the one off the old cassette (since the new one had a good gouge in it) and I was able to loosen the top hanger bolt and re-position the hanger and snug both bolts up. Needless to say I will be ordering a new hanger and machine screws. On the good side, I have the mechanical knowledge to repair my own bike and it failed at the corner of my street. No big incident, and I will be out riding it again this evening.

@Robert Great job. @ Joeseph, the rain was quite enjoyable and you are spot on about wearing bright colors and having your lights blinking. I would ride in this 60 degree rain all day long. To bad work interupts my biking. Be safe everyone and stay alert.

Wasn’t that a very nice warm rain this morning? Does it not amaze you how motorist will try to hit that puddle as they pass you? The funny thing, I am already wet from the ride so it really is not going to make much of a difference, NICE TRY motorist. On a serious note, on days like these I wear visible clothing and both lights front and back. Safety should always be first. Enjoy your day everyone.

If anyone would be part of a team please join us The Coasters, just average bikers united to combine OUR miles and points to keep us on top. @Joseph, I just had success uploading the file directly form the Garmin device from my profile page. Hit workouts and a drop down menu gives you options. I had my Garmin connected to the PC and was able to copy the file for today's ride to the Challenge site. Beacuse I had been logging my miles manually, now that there is data from my Garmin, it shows my average speed to be 2,113 mph. I feel pretty good about that!
Joseph Howard Sun May 18 21:29:00 2014

Awesome ride today to Skaneateles Lake. @David I could not agree more. I choose to ride my bike everywhere for me and the Earth. I do it because I can and with and my own integrity. I use a Garmin edge 800 to track my rides but endomondo will not upload that data and every time I log my miles on the endomondo site it just asks what type of ride and distance. That might be why some people only log miles. Anyways there is another 60 points for team Coasters. GO COASTERS!

@Phyllis, the 5 Boro ride was fun once again. Some of the usual standing too long in line for things, but with 30,000+ riders that comes with it. Saw just about every kind of bike and rider under the sun. NYC really is nice to ride in. On Saturday we started a ride in NJ, used a water taxi to get to the West Side and had fun on the Greenway.
Gary Schyve Wed May 7 01:06:00 2014
No kids tonight so I got out and did a few miles by myself on the canal path after work. Another beautiful evening.

Great day for riding today in the New York City area! Jonathan, I am envious of your doing the 5 boro bike ride. Hope you had a great time! I did it several years but did not sign up this year. Biked the Bronx River Parkway today, a road that is closed for 6 1/2 miles in Westchester. Great ride there! Lots of families biking together with kids of all different ages. A fun event in May, June and September on Sundays from 10 - 2pm.
Gary Schyve Mon May 5 23:23:00 2014
@Jason, yes, I love riding with the kids. I'll still ride to work some days this summer, but my main focus will be on them. My son actually out-ran me on the way home yesterday for a brief period. Of course, long-term is another story, but I'm proud of him. @David, last summer was a blast riding for the miles with you too, but this is a different kind of fun. We rode again today - this time to a volleyball game. I'm trying to keep them as active as possible with their friends. Otherwise I think we've all heard the saying about "idle hands." Everyone enjoy the fantastic weather!

I wasn't going to log all my miles one Endomondo and was keeping track on my spreedsheet when I gave up my smart phone, however after seeing that the WARM up period was covering peoples miiles before March, I decided to go back and log everything until now. My miles are up to date and I am ready for the challenge to start Wednesday, hoping for no rain and no bike issues. Flat tire and broken spoke was not fun yesterday but I made it home just took me longer:) good luck everyone with your miles.

Bruce Herbach Sat Sep 14 10:24:00 2013
@Mick on my Surly I have the shimono SPD pedals that are flat on one side and clips on the other. Use this bike for all errands and commuting. So it doesn't matter which shoes I use. Might work for you.
mick llanos Sat Sep 14 07:03:00 2013

The fault line tour had about 100 riders and was well organized. The heat would have been more bearable if there had been some shade, but only Tennessee offered up a few trees here and there. The sag support was great and the hottest day I had 8 bottles of water in a 62 mile ride.

@Gene, joining a VFD is one of the most extraordinary things you can do. I have been trying to get into my local VFD for several years, but there have been few openings and those have gone to the younger gents who have contacts within the hall. Hoping this is my year!

@David, my first real road bike was a Fuji Absolute we got from the local dirt mall. Going to need to see a photo of your ride soon.
David J Clifton Sat Jun 15 04:25:00 2013
@Gene Fuji absolute hybrid. Fenders and rear rack with panniers. Tend to carry way to much. Currently running 700x35c tires as well. Have spring saddle seat with spring webbing underneath for comfort. Feel like I live on it. Last months goal was 1000. This month try to beat last month. Lol.
Gene Connor Fri Jun 14 09:31:00 2013
@David - So what are you rockin' and rollin' on that you're logging all those miles? Fenders and full racks?
David J Clifton Thu Jun 13 19:04:00 2013
@Gene once you have fenders on a commuter you will never go back. especially on rainy days like this one. Congrats on the upgrade.

@Joseph its in the past have a GREAT day and ignore there ignorance :)

Gene Connor Thu Jun 13 17:02:00 2013
Well the good thing about the car being in the shop all week is I have a great excuse for riding to work each day. The bad news? The rain. Oof! However, like David I have decided to rock the Portland look and added full fenders and a rack with trunk bag to the cyclocross/touring bike. Splash on my friends, splash on. @Joseph - I found a way to get even with them. I have the Niterider 500 and on flash mode it's apparently bright enough to annoy them - at least they see me!

Why do motorists think they own the road? This morning I have a very nice person tell me to get out of the road. Let’s see I am riding to work in the rain, 60 degree temperatures soaked while this person is driving a warm and dry SUV eating and enjoying coffee had to put down their window to tell that I was in their road. Really!
Jason G. Morgan Wed Jun 12 16:54:00 2013
Congrats Joshua Poppel for being the big New York winner for the month of May. Wear that Jersey proudly! PA and Wisconsin sure do have an abundance of winners though, hopefully that changes next month. We could all use a year supply of TP, no?!?

Cool and rainy here in Buffalo today, but another wonderful day to get out there and ride. Sure beats all of those mornings where I was in the saddle at 4 degrees in January.

Bike plans for the city of Syracuse can be found at http://www.syracuse.ny.us/BIMP.aspx. These maps show the Westside extension of Onondaga Lake connection to the creek walk and much more. Did the Hudson Valley Honor Ride today out of Maybrook, NY. This is part of the Ride 2 Recovery series to raise funds for injured veterans. Great experience with motorcycle escort and police traiffic control.
Joseph Howard Sat Jun 8 06:09:00 2013
Thanks @Jason appreciate the ideas. I can definitely tell I need 2 sets of wheels for different types of riding. During the week I ride everywhere I need to go on my bike so the size tires that I have work well for that for now, but on the weekend when I ride 40+ I think I would like something for more speed. My Skaneateles ride as enjoyable as it was, was tough and would have been better with narrower tires. It is funny I am putting more miles on my bike per week than I ever did in my car.
Jason G. Morgan Fri Jun 7 23:06:00 2013
Jason G. Morgan Fri Jun 7 22:56:00 2013
Joseph Howard Fri Jun 7 18:05:00 2013
Thanks Guys. My bike has Shimano Ultegra wheels with Bontrager CX0, 700x34c tires. Can I put 700x23 on them? If so I will look into getting the Maxxis Re-Fuse tires.
Jason G. Morgan Fri Jun 7 17:28:00 2013
Robert Light Fri Jun 7 16:29:00 2013
Jason G. Morgan Thu Jun 6 22:57:00 2013
Joseph Howard Thu Jun 6 20:52:00 2013
I agree @Jason, it is always my back tire. I had my first flat the other day as well. New Bike 3 weeks old and a small staple got me. I guess that is to be expected when you ride 100+ miles a week. The roads in Syracuse have tons of crap on them. My bike has the option to go tubeless. Has anyone used these and if so how do you think they work?
Jason G. Morgan Thu Jun 6 20:18:00 2013
Robert Light Thu Jun 6 14:44:00 2013
1st flat of 2013! Rear tire, small, miniature spike stuck in my tire. I had just finish changing the tube and got my wheel back on when a motorist turned around and came back and asked if I needed anything. I happen to know the guy (unsure if he recognized me) he works at the College I work at. Keep the rubber side down!
Pedal On,

Logan Nedo Mon Jun 3 16:56:00 2013
@Holly There's nothing wrong with having an old bike, my road bike is steel and from the 80s. However, for your sake, bring the bike into a shop and do something about the chain and shifting. All that will do is make you miserable! And no need to worry about having bike specific clothing. It doesn't really matter unless you start riding longer distances. Happy riding!
Joseph Howard Mon Jun 3 16:05:00 2013
@Holly, any riding you do is only good if you enjoy it. With all my rides I always listen to what my body is telling me and am I enjoying myself. If the answer is no to either of these questions then I don’t ride or cut the ride short. It’s better to be on the safe side with smaller and more enjoyable rides then it is to hurt yourself on longer rides and then not be able to ride for days or even weeks. Anyways I guess what I am trying to say is good for you for riding. A famous quote I love is “Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” H.G. Wells
Holly Anna Mon Jun 3 15:21:00 2013

Jason G. Morgan Fri May 31 16:24:00 2013
@Robert, awesome!
Robert Light Fri May 31 13:15:00 2013
94 miles and I have to climb a Cat 2 at mile 80!! SHUT UP LEGS! Where are my points??
David J Clifton Wed May 29 08:56:00 2013
@Robert Great job. @ Joeseph, the rain was quite enjoyable and you are spot on about wearing bright colors and having your lights blinking. I would ride in this 60 degree rain all day long. To bad work interupts my biking. Be safe everyone and stay alert.
Joseph Howard Wed May 29 08:16:00 2013
Wasn’t that a very nice warm rain this morning? Does it not amaze you how motorist will try to hit that puddle as they pass you? The funny thing, I am already wet from the ride so it really is not going to make much of a difference, NICE TRY motorist. On a serious note, on days like these I wear visible clothing and both lights front and back. Safety should always be first. Enjoy your day everyone.
Joseph Howard Tue May 28 18:49:00 2013
Nicely done Robert
Robert Light Tue May 28 17:28:00 2013

Logan Nedo Mon May 27 23:07:00 2013
T-storms in the forecast and I will probably have to dedicate two afternoons this week to pavement marking for the Rochester Tour de Cure. Won't be getting much riding in this week =(
David J Clifton Mon May 27 18:01:00 2013
@Jonathan that is Great. figured you would get to bike there. lots of bike paths and such. Great Jobe. @Everyone you are all doing Great. I see all your miles and you inspire me to bike more. Just keep peddling and remember to be safe. You never know what abstacles are out there, kids, critters, and unfortunately other clueless people. Remember to be courteous and responsible and Please have some fun. Explore new routes make some new friends. You are all GREAT :)

David J Clifton Tue May 21 18:20:00 2013
@Jonathan enjoy your trip. we have all summer to bike.
Jonathan Benn Tue May 21 17:06:00 2013
Off to Davis CA for a week-without a bike. Keep riding, I'll try to catch up later.
David J Clifton Mon May 20 19:52:00 2013
@Phyllis thanks for the wonderful comment about The Coasters. Have been trying to cheer everyone on however I had a red message stating to many posts in a 24 hr period and could not respond until now. @ Jonathan, your biking just put in your miles and times if you can, happy to see you out there.@ Joseph did skaneteles lake twice last year however had not been out that way this year, will have to ride out that way, your doing great and Thanks for being part of OUR team. Its also great to see how helpful everyone is with there GPS and other devices as well as sharing about there rides.@Robert your doing great, I have taken it easy for a few days now to, the summer is long remember to relax we don't want any permanent injuries. @Jason your doing great with your miles and The Coasters thank you as do I. Its amazing to see so many average bikers come together for the effort of a TEAM, 8th place nationally just amazes me, Thank you all. If anyone would be part of a team please join us The Coasters, just average bikers united to combine OUR miles and points to keep us on top. If you only bike one time this summer we want you on our team, if you bike everyday we want you too :). Will continue to support all of you Via peptalks and comments as long as Endomondo allows me. Have a GREAT day one and all and safe cycling.
Joseph Howard Mon May 20 18:26:00 2013

Jonathan Benn Mon May 20 17:21:00 2013
Sort have the Garmin upload working. All the rides show up as "Sport" . Does anyone know how to either edit an entered ride from a device or have the upload save as transporation or MTB?
Jason G. Morgan Mon May 20 16:18:00 2013
In order to contribute to the Coasters more effectively, I left my car at work sometime last week. Thus, I have no choice but to hop on one of the bikes for everything until I'm lazy enough to bring it home. Not that I needed the motivation anyways, but just in case
Joseph Howard Sun May 19 20:40:00 2013
Jonathan that worked great. Thank you. I was able to upload my 20 miles I did today from my Garmin. Another 40 for the Coasters!!!
Robert Light Sun May 19 14:22:00 2013
3 days off the bike due to illness...fear not....I will catch and pass by you. Hoping for a short ride tomorrow!
Joseph Howard Sat May 18 16:40:00 2013
That is funny @Jonathan or should we call you “The Man of Steel”. I also have a new personal record. Last elevation gain recorded was 614 feet. Today’s ride put me at 1437 feet. Trust me when I tell you I will not be breaking that anytime soon. I am typing this from my bed feet raised. LOL. The ride was enjoyable but hard.
Jonathan Benn Sat May 18 16:37:00 2013
@Joseph, I just had success uploading the file directly form the Garmin device from my profile page.
Joseph Howard Sat May 18 16:29:00 2013
I just tried again @Jonathan. I get the same prompt that the software needs to be installed but I know its installed because I just uploaded my data to Garmin connect.
Jonathan Benn Sat May 18 16:06:00 2013
I've tried now several times to get the upload to work with my Garmin 200. The only thing I ever get is a request to update my Garmin Connect software. Has anyone else had any luck getting the data transfer to work with a Garmin 200?
Joseph Howard Sat May 18 16:04:00 2013
Awesome ride today to Skaneateles Lake.
Phyllis Richman Sat May 18 14:40:00 2013
I agree! I am from the dinosaur age and use an "old school bicycle computer". It is all about enjoying the ride along with personal integrity. Let's all get out and have fun on our bikes! I know that I am. Thanks for the encouraging comments David! The Coasters has a great team leader for anyone who is riding solo. It really is more fun to be part of a team.
David J Clifton Sat May 18 12:51:00 2013
@mick understand what you mean. Told myself last year that I only care about myself and my integrity.. I don't care if you use GPS or smart phone or even old school bicycle computer. Even Google maps. But log your times. You are doing great and to be riding single speed in the woods should get triple points.
mick llanos Sat May 18 06:51:00 2013
I dont understand how the top 3 guys have no gps, no times and dan mckeena rode 3 rides at the same time.. come on people, if you have the distance you should have the time. And stop with the duplicate distances and workouts. i get home from work and wait for my gps to charge.. i dont want to but i have mostly gps tracked rides and proud to prove it! Everyone have a great weekend. Sorry if i offended any one.
Bruce Herbach Sat May 18 00:07:00 2013
Why is the Challenge week Sunday through Saturday and the Endomondo calendar Monday through Sunday? It would be nice if they were the same.
Jonathan Benn Fri May 17 20:36:00 2013
Another car free day. A commute, work related errands and then a quick trip to the mall after dinner. Nearly 35 miles for the day.
Jason G. Morgan Fri May 17 19:00:00 2013
@Joseph, I couldn't agree more. Layering and proper windproof shells make for a much more pleasant commute. I was forced to pick up my gnarly crew in my car two days this week, and my entire work day was ruined. Back to the bike this morning and the day just flew bye effortlessly.
Joseph Howard Fri May 17 08:07:00 2013
It was a very windy commute home last night and a chilly ride in today but still better than being in a car.
David J Clifton Fri May 17 06:23:00 2013
@Luke you should. After all 4 wheels. Its like riding two bikes.
Luke Brown Thu May 16 17:03:00 2013

David J Clifton Wed May 15 20:43:00 2013
So your riding solo, why not be part of something bigger. Part of a team who encourages you, no matter how little or how much you bike. Please join The Coasters and celebrate biking with us. Were average people trying to move up in the national challenge and we need everyone. We need a larger team.
David J Clifton Wed May 15 12:34:00 2013

@Johnathon, I agree. The weather here in Buffalo returned to early spring with a constant 20mph wind, so I decided to stay in for fleet maintenance and ended up riding a few miles to hit the ATM and grab some dinner on the single speed. It ended up being just what the doctor ordered.
Jonathan Benn Sun May 12 12:22:00 2013
Not every ride is epic-2.81 miles for bagels this morning. Maybe more this afternoon.
David J Clifton Sat May 11 20:34:00 2013

@Phyllis, the 5 Boro ride was fun once again. Some of the usual standing too long in line for things, but with 30,000+ riders that comes with it. Saw just about every kind of bike and rider under the sun. NYC really is nice to ride in. On Saturday we started a ride in NJ, used a water taxi to get to the West Side and had fun on the Greenway.
Gary Schyve Mon May 6 20:06:00 2013
No kids tonight so I got out and did a few miles by myself on the canal path after work. Another beautiful evening.
Phyllis Richman Sun May 5 18:42:00 2013
Great day for riding today in the New York City area!
Gary Schyve Sun May 5 18:23:00 2013
@Jason, yes, I love riding with the kids.
Logan Nedo Sun May 5 12:23:00 2013

@ Gary that's great. I enjoy riding with my daughter too, 10 but she is a little scared of her new road bike:( . Hopefully by summers end. Have fun with the kids....more important than any miles.
Jason G. Morgan Sat May 4 20:31:00 2013
@Gary, riding with the kids must be incredible. The Ride for Roswell River course looks fun, nice to have other cyclists here in the Buffalo area.
Gary Schyve Sat May 4 17:04:00 2013
@David, my kids are 12 and 14 and we're practicing for the 30 mile river ride of the Ride for Roswell coming up in June. In fact my son already has his minimum donations and my daughter is working on hers. Last year I was focused on miles. This year I'm focused on helping them get their miles up. So far, so good.
Jason G. Morgan Sat May 4 13:42:00 2013
@David, I totally understand that. I have a platelet donation tomorrow morning and I'm thinking of the best way to get up early and get out for a few miles just to keep the points coming!
David J Clifton Sat May 4 06:39:00 2013
@Jonathan have a GREAT time. I have heard its fun.
David J Clifton Sat May 4 06:38:00 2013

I went back and logged on my miles and now I'm fairly caught up. I won't be going cross country this year so I have lots more commuting and riding with the kids to do to keep up with you and Mick!

Hello all of my NYBC friends! As many of you know, over the summer I rode 3700 miles to raise money for Sunrise Day Camp, the only dedicated day camp in the country for children with cancer and their families. I've been on sort of a "cycling crash" since then and I haven't really ridden as many miles since, I guess my motivation to train and ride wasn't there after such a large undertaking - until now. We just found out that my nine-year-old son William needs to have surgery tomorrow to have a tumor removed. The doctors are all 98% sure it will be benign but all the test thus far have come away inconclusive so he's going to have it removed. I'm not asking for money or anything like that. However, since I'll be at the hospital all day tomorrow with him and can't ride for him I was wondering if you could. The weather should be gorgeous here in the Empire State (at least most of it) and the positive energy you send out to him in the universe via your pedal cranks would be so beneficial. My most sincere gratitude to each of you - Gene.

HI Ted! Sorry to get back to you so late. I've been physically incapacitated (back injury) since Jan 1 so I haven't really go on. I did a supported cross country. Since I'm a teacher I only had from the end of June to the end of August to get it done. My family was my support team and my 13-year-old ended up riding 400 miles with me. We ended up raising almost $25,000 for a local camp that serves children with cancer. But I'm feeling better now and I'm back on the bike!

Hello December... good luck everyone with your goals.
David J Clifton Thu Nov 29 08:17:00 2012
Great job Gene. Glad your health is better. 6200 is alot of miles. Winter is definitely tougher with cold and snow. 28 this am and icy. Had to bike before work today....generally to and from....have a great day all.
Gene Connor Thu Nov 29 07:39:00 2012
Hey Gary and David - I'm finally back with you. Had some health problems and the roads around here were pretty crappy after Sandy. I'm planning to ride through the winter thoug so my goal now is to reach 7,000 miles by the end of December. I'm sitting at 6200 and change now, so I think I can hit it! Like David says, "just keep pedaling!"
David J Clifton Wed Nov 28 20:18:00 2012
Trying to reach 6000 before the year ends however the weather and other obligations keep coming up. Over 5000 and that is with a month off:) just keep peddling just keep peddling ;)

@ Gary, thank you for the compliment. Part of that was the cross country journey to raise money for the camp (lots of long days in the saddle), part of that was trainiing (i.e., lots of long commutes) before the cross country, and part of that was the fact that after riding all of those miles it just feels weird if I dont' get out and ride a good distance (sometimes twice). Now I'm trying to do the Year Long commuter challenge - I'm so far behind!

So I rode 42 miles this afternoon with a good friend of mine who was a track racer for the US ParaOlympic team. It was a true shock to the system to try and keep up with him. I'll be hurting tomorrow but I need to keep logging those miles - only three more days everyone. Congratulations on all your hard work!

To all my New York NBC friends - you have all been so supportive and so motivating to me in my cross country journey. Yesterday I rolled into Sunrise Day Camp after traveling 3713 from San Diego. Its an amazing camp and the children there (as well as their families) really need the services this camp provides. Although the journey is finished, people can still donate by going to https://www.wizevents.com/register/register_add.php;id=1056. It doesn't take a large donation, anything at all would be a big help to us in reaching our goal of sending more children to this camp.
Gene Connor Sat Aug 25 20:05:00 2012

Gary Schyve Wed Aug 15 16:33:00 2012
@David, I know cars are necessary for some things but meeting other bike riders is just such a great experience. Instead of being in a big fat hurry to create more CO2, it's so much nicer to spend time with people who love nature and enjoy being healthier. What is the ARC and where will you ride?

@Gary stayed at DiFilipos in Lockport-good Italian food and a funky B&B upstairs. The canal trail was fun. Liked seeing all the herons and kingfishers along the way.
Gary Schyve Sun Aug 12 20:23:00 2012
@Jonathan, you should have told me - I ride the canal from Middleport to Lockport every day and could have met up with you somewhere!
Jonathan Benn Sun Aug 12 19:01:00 2012
Just got home from a 5 day tour of Western NY by way of the Erie Canal. Rochester to Niagara Falls. A great trip-Cycling friendly B&Bs in Brockport, Lockport and Adams Basin made for a great ride. DeFilipo's in Lockport had great food a quirky boarding house sort of vibe. They see lots of touring riders.
Gene Connor Wed Aug 8 20:35:00 2012
@ Gary - I certainly hear you my friend! Although I do have to say that I have been very blessed/lucky as I've riddent 2600 miles across the country and I've only been "buzzed" maybe a handful of times. Right now I'm on some very twisty mountain roads with no shoulders in Kentucky and even the truck drivers either wait for me to get to a straight spot where they can get around or they give me a fairly wide birth as they pass me. I'm actually more worried about the drivers in NYC and Long Island!
Jonathan Benn Sun Aug 5 19:56:00 2012
@Gary-Agressive driving was an issue at Tour of the Catskills bike race today. I was driving a wheel car in the race and on two different occassions, pickups blasted by the group, each time nearly running other cars off the road. This was with signage, and ample police support. Some drivers just can't stand to share the road....
Gary Schyve Sat Aug 4 18:21:00 2012
Had a close call today with what appeared to be a couple of teenage boys out for a joyride in a bright blue 4-door. I was riding on the shoulder of a narrow 2-lane road with my new 2-watt Cygolite Hotshot tail light in strobe mode. I was as visible as possible. They didn't care though. They drove as close as possible to me, laughing loudly the whole time. Why do children not understand death?
Gary Schyve Mon Jul 30 22:07:00 2012
@Jonathan, the rims are not cracking at the spokes. They are cracking inside. It's the inner layer of the rim that is being stressed - the part that separates the tube from the spokes. The problem is that the pressure of the tube, combined with the impact of potholes or other jarring surfaces, is splitting the rim apart. Apparently the technical term is "hoop stress".
Jonathan Benn Mon Jul 30 21:17:00 2012
@Gary-I run 30-35 psi when I run 700X54, a 2.2 29er, off road. Using a nearly identical second wheel set, I run 85 psi using a 700X38 kevlar belted urban/touring tire. Bike is set up for disk brakes so there is no brake surface issues for the rim. I was thinking that it might the build for the wheel that is causing the issue. Some machine laced wheels can have spoke tension that is much higher than hand laced.
Gary Schyve Mon Jul 30 20:44:00 2012
@Mick, tubeless would be lighter, but I think that wouldn't change the pressure problem. But I've been riding at 35lbs and loving it. I think the bike actually handles better than ever!

@Travis, Honestly, I think my street has to be one of the worst in the state for potholes. In other words, even worse conditions than mountain biking!

mick llanos Mon Jul 30 08:27:00 2012
@ Gary, go tubless!! Bontranger makes good tires to convert.
travis montross Sun Jul 29 23:29:00 2012
@gary i run 50-60 psi on my mtn bike when im on the road and 25-35 when im mtn biking.
Gary Schyve Sun Jul 29 20:18:00 2012
Ok, I did some research on the cracking rim issue. It appears I have been using too much tire pressure for my setup. I'm sure some of you will want to smack me in the head for this but...I've been putting about 60 lbs of pressure in my tires thinking it would decrease my rolling resistance. Not sure if it did. But it apparently cracked my rims. I am now running at 35. Hopefully I am done buying new rims for awhile.
Jonathan Benn Fri Jul 27 14:06:00 2012

Cracked the rear scandium rim on my Race X Lite wheel last autumn - all the way around the rim. Bought a set of brand new rims so I could repair it. During the winter, I had the rim replaced and all new spokes installed. This morning my back tire was flat so I swapped in my spare rear wheel. When I got home, I went to replace the rear tube and discovered the back rim was cracked wide open again. I have one more spare rim to install. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to keep it from cracking? Am I hitting too many potholes?

@ Mick - I am truly the lucky one! Riding at a slow pace with her today was almost as much fun as bombing the steepest hill (or successfully climbing one)! It sort of brought back my own joy of what its like to fall in love with riding again. Tomorrow I have a 115 mile ride to get to Tribune, KS and I'm leaving at 5:30 in the morning to beat the heat. The payoff is that after about six hours of riding, my daughter is going to join me for the last 20 miles!

Hello Everyone! As some of you know, I am riding cross country to raise money to send children with cancer to Sunrise Day Camp. Today I had the extremely rare opportunity to share part of my journey with my 13-year-old daughter. At one point she exclaimed, " I learned to take out my water bottle without crashing, I can shift gears, and I'm getting to ride cross country with my dad, what could be cooler than that!" And they say there is no magic left in the world!

Hi fellow riders. If you ask me, the only good, comfortable saddle isn't a saddle, but a seat attached to a recumbent bicycle. :)
David Patterson Tue Jul 10 22:29:00 2012
Holly, I can relate..I was struck last year & loss of consciousness from impact until awaking I was already secured on a back board..concussion..would have been unthinkably worse had I not worn one:) My helmet broke from the impact..& I am able to write this note:) Keep recovering:)
Gene Connor Tue Jul 10 22:08:00 2012
@Holly - I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I've been hit three times and I too can second your statement about wearing a helmet as it definitely saved my life the first time. Please keep us updated on your progress and when you get back on the bike. I'll ride tomorrow for you!
David J Clifton Tue Jul 10 22:02:00 2012
@joe if you're looking for a comfortable saddle, look at the seats that have springs on the bottom. They also have spring webbing these are the most comfortable seats. Even after they give when you sit on them to give more to absorb the bumps. Good luck.

Hello my fellow riders. I wanted to let you know I won't be finishing this quest! :-( I was unfortunately hit by a car while riding my bike. O have a shattered eye socket, a cracked jaw bone and 22 stiches above my eye and 5 below. I was finally released from the trama unit at Albany med. I just want you all to be careful out there. People don't care if your on a bike and have the.right away. Make sure you have your helmets on guys. I can honestly say they work. My Dr said I wouldn't be here if I didn't have mine on!!! Be safe and keep on pedaling my friends!!!!

@ Gary keep going pal. 2 yrs ago I was a 34 waist and above 185lb, now I'm just under 32w and my summer riding weight is 170's......3rd day not feeling well and I have hill TT tonight. All that climbing to be sick the day of the race
Gary Schyve Tue Jun 26 22:18:00 2012
@Rob, for me, riding is a great stress reliever. But the fact is, it's good for anybody. And I agree with you - having fellow riders to help push you is an enormous incentive to try harder. I love riding, but people like Mick, David, and you encourage me to keep pushing myself to do more than ever. I've lost about 5 pounds since the challenge started and I intend to get back to a healthier weight before the end of August. Please - keep pushing me and everyone else as we help each other accomplish more than any of us thought possible!
David J Clifton Tue Jun 26 17:57:00 2012
@rob Great job and welcome ot the addiction of riding, its amazing how the more you ride the more time you find to ride. happy to hear you have set higher goals for yourself, bring a few friends along and get them excited about the sport.
David J Clifton Tue Jun 26 17:55:00 2012
@Kevin...hope you feel better, my legs hurt when I don't bike. It is very addicting. You will make up the two days soon.
Rob Torres Tue Jun 26 15:02:00 2012
When I 1st started riding in late April I thought 50 miles a week was a good goal. Shortly after I found endomondo and the NBC. I now realize I can do that in a day or 2. Originally I thought,"I can get 1500pts. by the end of August". Now my new goal is 1500pts a month! I'm still amazed at all the miles so many of you ride each day! Keep it up! You are All my inspiration to ride further every day! Thank-you!
Kevin Kretzschmar Tue Jun 26 14:49:00 2012
sick for the 2nd in a row. sinus' clogged up and my head is pounding. 2 days of riding shot
Jonathan Benn Tue Jun 26 12:18:00 2012
Got a Garmin Edge 200. Hopefully, it will facilitate loading data to this site. The graphs that can be produced are pretty cool. One of my climbs is not as big as I thought it was though.
David J Clifton Tue Jun 26 08:26:00 2012
@gene...all fun yr doing Great.
Gene Connor Mon Jun 25 19:06:00 2012
Today was a pain in the rear - literally. The roads were so rough that by the time I got to my destination it was hard to sit down on my seat. The day saw me start with a 12% incline for a mile and a half and later I peaked at 4246 feet for the day. I then had a drop from 2800 to 800 feet in ten miles - gotta love descents! Ended up in 100+ degree heat and -100 elevation. And its only day two!
Rob Torres Mon Jun 25 17:48:00 2012
Got home from a ride just in time to watch my house and cars get slammed with hale. Good luck to all in their long rides. Have fun and be safe! I don't write much but i love reading everyone's comments.

Hello everyone! I'm in San Diego and getting ready to start my cross country ride for Sunrise Day Camp tomorrow. I reconned the first 21 miles of the route today so I ended up doing 42 training miles. Tomorrow 55 miles and Monday 86 miles. Here I come Gary!
David J Clifton Sat Jun 23 08:09:00 2012
@gary...we just recently got a new ice machine at work...enjoy the ice.
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 21 13:35:00 2012
Been through 48 oz of water so far. Co-workers are complaining about my ice consumption.
Jonathan Benn Thu Jun 21 07:05:00 2012
Hydrate today and smile everytime a co-worker says "I can't believe you ride a bike on days like this..."
Gary Schyve Wed Jun 20 17:51:00 2012
@Mick, it's a combination of about 1 mile on roads through the city of Lockport, then 12 miles down the Erie Canal path, and then the last half mile through Middleport to my house. Keep in mind the path is almost completely flat and I had a steady 15mph tailwind gusting over 20mph. Today was my second fastest overall speed with my best being about 20.5mph last summer. I think the tailwind was about 30mph that day.
mick llanos Wed Jun 20 17:40:00 2012
@Gary, i have to ask, if your riding that full suspension at 17 mph for 13 miles i am very impressed.i think im a little faster on dirt with my small block 8,s. still only 12 mph riding hard. just wondering.

Hey everyone - greetings from sunny (and hot) Clinton, OK. I actually got some riding done today due to an unforeseen (and forced) stop. Our air conditioning blew out outside of Springfield,MO and we made it this far but seeing as how we're about to cross the desert twice we're having it fixed. Unfortunately, it was the compressor so its going to cost about $1,000 - so much to sticking to our budget. But, if all goes well, we'll raise a lot of money for the kids. I'll write more once I start riding from San Diego. Stay well (and safe) everyone!
David J Clifton Sun Jun 17 19:58:00 2012
Happy fathers day. @ Jonathon great job..grilling is good but biking and grilling is great;)
Jonathan Benn Sun Jun 17 19:44:00 2012
Had a great ride today-took our touring setup for a trip to a local park. Carried everything in either the BOB I pulled or in the panniers my wife used. Bison steaks on our gas grill, expresso, table cloth and real plates-If you plan you can bring just about anything on a bike ride. Lots of odd looks from other park users, lots of smiles for us.
Rob Torres Sun Jun 17 10:57:00 2012

Hello everyone. I don't know if any of you have seen this article - http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article - but be safe out there as you commute, transport, sport, mountain bike. I know on the eve of my big ride it made me a bit nervous but stay safe and I hope to hear all about your amazing adventures!
Gary Schyve Fri Jun 15 10:23:00 2012
Gene, have a safe trip out and a safer trip back. And enjoy your few days off.
Gene Connor Fri Jun 15 05:40:00 2012
Well folks, it was great to finally be able to break into the top 10 just in time to stop riding for ten days. I leave for San Diego today and I start riding back June 24th. I'll be catching up to Gary and the others soon enough. If you want to read about our travels you can follow us at www.connorsarmy.blogspot.com. I'll see you all on the road!
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 14 21:29:00 2012
Mick, Thursday is my only weekday to get in extra miles as my kids take their dog to obedience training. I had never heard of a missing link until you mentioned it. I will definitely be buying some and adding them to my tool kit. Thanks a million!!
mick llanos Thu Jun 14 20:21:00 2012
Gary,, you should carry a missing link. i had a chain with 3 missing links and it workrd fine. great when your stuck in the middle of nowhere! And stop following me. how am i supposed to catch you,, haha.
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 14 20:10:00 2012
Broken chain today. Got about 5,500 miles out of it though. It started giving me shifting problems around 2,800 but I was able to compensate for awhile. This morning I started to feel the slightest bit of slippage intermittently. By lunchtime it broke loose. Fortunately, an understanding co-worker let me borrow their vehicle to drive home and get my spare. Back in business now, but lost precious time riding during the lunch hour. I'll have to make it up tomorrow. Keep riding everyone!!
Gene Connor Thu Jun 14 09:10:00 2012
@Gary, I finally managed to get it narrowed down and it was excrutiatingly painful. Much to my wife's chagrin I am a bit of a pack rat when it comes to tools and bike parts so of course I want to plan for any contingency. I spent about two hours online last night looking at the tool and parts packing lists of people who have done cross country unsupported rides and used that as a basis. I ended up cramming all my tools into a toy toolbox slightly bigger than a shoe box and I have some cleaning/lubrication supplies in another small box. I have an extra set of wheels with new cassette, tires and tubes, an extra spare tire, a floor pump, some detachable fenders and my handlebar bag filled with some odds and ends - that's it. For me that the hard part. I only hope I don't have that one freak break down where I need the one tool I whittled out. Oof!
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 14 00:14:00 2012
@Gene, I was going to ask you about being nervous, but I didn't want to plant any seeds. I have a spare set of wheels and tires hanging in my garage, a spare set of pedals (which need to be rebuilt at the moment), and I carry a backpack with 2 spare tubes, an air pump, toolkit, and other items just in case. That's every day for just a 30 mile round trip commute. I can only imagine packing for a 3,600 mile trek across the country!
Gene Connor Wed Jun 13 19:34:00 2012
@Gary, I'm excited and nervous at the same time. The only problem now is packing. I'm being suported (sort of necessary since I only have ten weeks and I'm crossing the desert) and my main problem is narrowing down my tools and extra parts list. I have way too many things that I want to take.
Gary Schyve Wed Jun 13 13:33:00 2012
Great job, Gene! Bet you can't wait to get started on your trip.
Gene Connor Wed Jun 13 08:31:00 2012

Jamin Robinson Mon Jun 11 21:48:00 2012
Thanks for the shoe tips! I have a friend who lives east of Great Barrington. Heading to his cabin out there. I normally put stuff like this off, but it's nice to have the goal for a change!
Leslie Power Mon Jun 11 09:46:00 2012
First really long ride this year yesterday! (Also first day in two weeks without thunderstorms.) 75 bucolic miles: meadows, llamas, goats, hilltops .. first 2012 baltimore oriole... didn't eat enough salt, but otherwise a perfect ride!

Jamin, on the shoes: worth a trip to a decent bike store to try them on. Albany to W. Ma - that's great! Where in W.Ma?

Kenneth Walter Mon Jun 11 09:14:00 2012
I've been using a pair of Pearl Izumi Select Road shoes for about a year now. Find them to be very good and they're in the 75 - 100 price range.
Jamin Robinson Sun Jun 10 21:12:00 2012
Oh! And I'm trying to challenge myself to bike to Western MA from the capital district in August. So good tires are obviously a must. :-) - Sorry if this is random... I really don't know anyone else to ask about this stuff!
Jamin Robinson Sun Jun 10 21:11:00 2012
So does anyone have suggestions for a good intro pair of shoes? I'm really getting into this and would love to have appropriate gear... I just don't quite have enough for a huge investement yet. So perhaps in the 80-100 range?
Luke Brown Sat Jun 9 22:10:00 2012
If axel of the pedal is not bent, and the raceway of the bearings are not spalled, and if they can be taken apart, you can re-grease the bearings. If they are sealed bearings, you can oil them every now and the with 3-in-1 oil, especially after riding in the rain. But after 10,000 miles you deserve new ones!
Kevin Kretzschmar Sat Jun 9 19:33:00 2012
Did a quick 20m on the tri bike, in about an hour. Race tomorrow, 1st tri of the season.
Gene Connor Fri Jun 8 17:21:00 2012
I just got a set of the 520's about two months ago and I'm using them with a pair of Mavic MTB shoes. That's the setup I'm going to be using on the cross country so I'll let you know how they hold up!
Gary Schyve Fri Jun 8 13:50:00 2012
Anyone have any thoughts on the life expectancy of a set of pedals? Is 10,000 miles good? Most of my riding is on the canal path.
travis montross Fri Jun 8 10:59:00 2012
@gary i probably have around 1000-1500 miles. they are less than a year old too.
Gary Schyve Fri Jun 8 10:30:00 2012
@Travis, how many miles do you have on your 520s so far? I have about 9 to 10,000 on my 324s.
Jonathan Benn Fri Jun 8 06:10:00 2012
Gary, I use Egg Beater Candy, they have a small platform around the egg beater. The cleat will mount like an SPD cleat and if you use a MTB shoe, its easy to walk around with as well.
travis montross Thu Jun 7 23:28:00 2012
i use the Shimano PD-M520 Pedal. they are cheap but hold up ive had them for a year now and they work great theyve been through alot of crashes. i also use the serfas astro all mmountain shoes.
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 7 22:45:00 2012
@Jonathan, which series of Egg Beaters do you use? I am about ready for new shoes too.
Jonathan Benn Thu Jun 7 22:34:00 2012
Gary, you might want to try Crank Brothers Egg Beaters. They are simple, easy to service and are great in muddy conditions. Best pedals I have ever used.
Gary Schyve Thu Jun 7 20:39:00 2012
What a beautiful day to ride in WNY! I saw some heavy rains on RADAR, but they passed just west of my cycling route today...for a change. I've been using Shimano SPD/platform pedals the last 2 years. Had the right side repaired twice so far. 2 weeks ago the left side started acting up. So I replaced the set with new ones. Yesterday I had to put the old right side one back on after about 500 miles. Maybe it's time to upgrade?
David J Clifton Wed Jun 6 16:33:00 2012
@jonathan, Great job, helps spread the word about biking as well. some people don't really have a clue what they are able to do, until they have to. I enjoy biking to work more than driving, do it all winter long and yes I am happy we had a mild winter. I even have a trailer for my groceries. lol
Jonathan Benn Wed Jun 6 14:44:00 2012
Dropped my Jeep off at the dealership this morning for some service and an inspection. Amazing how some people react to someone pulling thier bike off the carrier and getting ready to ride off to work. The service tech asked how far I was going, when I said about 6 miles he said he'd never be able to ride that far-
Gene Connor Tue Jun 5 16:12:00 2012
@ Gary, I use a Louis Garneau Portland jacket (the only downside is it doesn't have pit zips), Performance bike rain pants, they work fairly well, and Louis Garneu shoe covers. If its really bad I use some waterproof socks and clip on fenders. I still get wet but since I'm riding with all that stuff over my bike clothes its not too bad. I finally got back on the bike today for a long(ish) ride after too many days off the bike.
Kevin Kretzschmar Tue Jun 5 09:57:00 2012
@ Gary....you to
Gary Schyve Tue Jun 5 09:51:00 2012
Nice dry morning finally. The sunshine looks and feels so good! Started a little early and took a few laps around the city park before going to work. Have to head home a little early this afternoon for my daughter's orchestra concert. (Don't want to be late for that.) Have a great day everyone!
David J Clifton Tue Jun 5 07:36:00 2012
@ Gary, my shoes are so wet from yesterday's ride I swear they weigh 10lbs each. lol. @ Gene Great job on your fundraiser sounds like your doing great and will have an awesome trip. @Jonathan way to go, mt biking in the rain and mud is fun however alot of work, hats off to you. @ Everyone feel free to post your comments and how your rides are going, enjoy reading everyones stories. You are all Great just keep peddling.
Gary Schyve Mon Jun 4 20:36:00 2012
@Gene, what do you use for rain gear? I have biking boots that work well. And I wore my Columbia rain coat. But what about something that breathes and something to cover my legs? It took all day for my clothes to dry out at work. Of course, just in time to ride home in the rain.
Gene Connor Mon Jun 4 19:46:00 2012
@ Gary, thanks for the envy! We actually had a fundraiser yesterday for the trip and we raised $1500 for the kids of Sunrise Day Camp - that's one camper for two weeks - we're on our way! It's going to rain tomorrow (and the next day, and the next day) but its a good chance for me to continue field testing my rain gear for the ride.
Gary Schyve Mon Jun 4 19:10:00 2012
Welcome back, @Gene! I am so jealous of your upcoming trip.
Gene Connor Mon Jun 4 17:59:00 2012
Well folks after a layoff of two days I'm ready to start back up with my training so I can catch up with you guys (and prep myself for the cross country in the process). It so funny how I can miss my legs screaming in pain.
Gary Schyve Sun Jun 3 22:06:00 2012
@Jonathan, nice shot of the muddy mess there. But you're not alone. For the last couple of days, my shifting has started getting sluggish about halfway through each ride. And the rest of the week isn't looking much better.
Jonathan Benn Sun Jun 3 20:52:00 2012
Two days in a row mountain biking in the rain. Almost as much time cleaning as riding. Less than a week to go for the Black Fly Challenge.
David J Clifton Sat Jun 2 05:44:00 2012
@gary thanks for enlightening me. Definitely over did it the last couple days but will push on. Never realized how much competition can make you want to do. Have a great weekend...will get in a few short rides if the rain stops. Kid weekend ;)
Gary Schyve Fri Jun 1 18:40:00 2012
@David, points do carry over. Just go to the dropdown list and change it from "June" to "Entire Period". This month will be more fun because I am setting up a riding schedule. One of my goals is to never miss a day. Woohoo!!
David J Clifton Fri Jun 1 18:09:00 2012
@gary thanks. Glad to be home and not on bike. Lol i am addicted wish points carried over was trying to catch you.
Gary Schyve Fri Jun 1 09:32:00 2012
Great start to the month, @David. Go, go, go!!
David J Clifton Fri Jun 1 09:13:00 2012
@ everyone, I am exhausted, fit in 74.7 miles yesterday and almost 58 before work, still need to bike home after, good luck everyone and if anyone wins some prizes please share, would be happy to see someone local win.
Gary Schyve Thu May 31 22:39:00 2012
@Gene, I'm hoping that enough people will keep talking about this problem so that Endomondo will look into it and get it fixed soon. My goal was 1,500 points by the end of the month and I made it. I just want the record to show that since I worked so hard at it. I suspect the changeover to "June" has to do with the International Date Line. Isn't that out in the Pacific somewhere?
Gene Connor Thu May 31 22:21:00 2012
@ Gary, apparently it has already made the shift over to June - problem is, we're all sitting at 0 points now. Not sure why.
Gene Connor Thu May 31 22:18:00 2012
@Gary, yes I have the same problem. I know I logged 34 miles in three rides today (one was a short trip to pick up some parts) but my points haven't moved since yesterday. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Jonathan Benn Thu May 31 20:45:00 2012
Ride with a nearly 5 mile climb after work today. Odd how some 20 mile rides are really easy and others drill you.
Gary Schyve Thu May 31 13:59:00 2012
Is anyone else having issues with the points updating? The mile tracker is fine for me, but the points indicator seems to be stuck.
Gary Schyve Wed May 30 22:48:00 2012
@Gene, yes, that was all in May but, I'm sure I just had more opportunities than you. When June 24th comes though, the tables will be turned. I envy your chance to cross the country, but I am also thrilled for you. It will be fun to try and stay ahead for as long as I can.
Gene Connor Wed May 30 19:15:00 2012
@Gary, have you logged all your mileage just in the month of May? That's damn impressive my friend. I'm lucky I got in as many as I did.
Gary Schyve Wed May 30 18:21:00 2012
Thanks, @Gene! I am planning to cross the 1500 mark tomorrow evening. An early start so I can commute + extra miles, then ride at lunch, then an evening ride with the rest of the Tire Shredders team from work. We are hoping to make it to 2nd place in NYS tomorrow. This challenge is such a great motivator! I'll be looking forward to you passing me sometime in July once you start on your big ride!
Gene Connor Wed May 30 16:49:00 2012
@Gary, its good to see you up on top of the leader board again!
Gene Connor Wed May 30 15:49:00 2012
@Gary, no unfortunately we'll be coming up from the South from Jersey and then crossing over the George Washington on our way to Long Island. We leave San Diego on June 24th and should arrive back on Long Island August 26th.
Gary Schyve Wed May 30 15:31:00 2012
@Gene, will you be passing through Western New York on your XC ride? When do you think you'll arrive?
Gene Connor Tue May 29 20:10:00 2012
@ Gary, thank you so much for the suggestion. Being that it comes from someone that has logged as many miles as you I'll take your advice. As far as the road/mountain conversation goes, I think the skinnier tires do make a difference in that you have less contact/less resistance on the road tires than on the 1.95 or thicker mtb tires. Also, unless you're running a 29er, the wheel circumference on the road bike means you're covering more distance per revolution. If you want the best of both worlds, maybe a cyclocross bike would work for you - you could run skinny or fat tires on it depending on where you're going.
Gary Schyve Tue May 29 19:16:00 2012
@Mick, I certainly find it easier to pedal on asphalt, but is the actual road bike that much faster? I'm riding an all-carbon dual-suspension Trek right now (for reference).
Gary Schyve Tue May 29 19:15:00 2012
@Gene, if you're going to and from the site, I would log that as "transport". While you're on the charity ride, I would log that as "sport".
mick llanos Tue May 29 18:40:00 2012
@ Gary, i average 11-12 mph on dirt. i would easily do 5 mph faster if not more. ive been told i have a big engine and know how to use it.
Gene Connor Tue May 29 18:21:00 2012
If anyone wants a (I hope) fun diversion. I'm keeping a blog which I'll keep up during the cross country ride I'm doing for Sunrise Day Camp. I'll be starting to update every day starting next Sunday but for now check it out at www.connorsarmy.blogspot.com. Some fun posts about my bike commuting and other observations of life. I will freely admit to being influence by the Bike Snob!
Gene Connor Tue May 29 18:16:00 2012
@Gary - I was figuring I would log them as cycle, sport or should I log them as cycle, transport since I'm riding my way from San Diego back home to Long Island? What's your take?
Gary Schyve Tue May 29 17:39:00 2012
@Mick, is a road bike that much faster?
Gary Schyve Tue May 29 17:38:00 2012
@Gene, just remember to record those miles under the right category.
David J Clifton Tue May 29 17:36:00 2012
@gene count all yr miles you bike;)
Gene Connor Tue May 29 16:32:00 2012
So I looked at the national leader board and I'm looking at the miles the guy in the top slot is racking up and I'm blown away! I'm just wondering, if I'm doing a cross country charity ride, can I count those miles? What do you guys think?
mick llanos Tue May 29 15:27:00 2012
@Gary, to go fast!! I will always ride dirt, i am into 24 hour and endurance events. on endomondo most challenges are kcal,s. making it more even for mountain to road. i am entered in 22 challenges on endomondo mostly mountain biking. have a great ride tonite.
Gary Schyve Tue May 29 09:44:00 2012
@Mick, it really is a great motivator. I've never done a challenge like this before and never thought it would be something that would push me, but I was totally wrong. Now, why change to a road bike?
David J Clifton Tue May 29 08:19:00 2012
@mick...you definitely should get a road bike or atleast a hybrid either way your doing great keep it up.

@ Gary, isnt it great how these challenges motivate people. i need to get a road bike for this challenge, have a great day!
Gary Schyve Mon May 28 20:23:00 2012
Thanks, @Mick!! You made me ride way more than I had planned on today. I was going to take a short ride in the morning and then see a movie. Instead, you dragged me out for more riding. Thank you!! I know you will pass me again soon...but I will just keep chasing you down - I promise!
mick llanos Mon May 28 20:14:00 2012
@David,, Good Luck!! @Gary,, nice job!!
Gary Schyve Mon May 28 19:01:00 2012
@David...Thanks! But regardless of position, we all need to keep pushing each other. Seriously, everyone, keep going no matter what. We will all have missed days where there's just nothing we can do about them. So when we can get out, let's make the most of it in order to make up for those times. Even now, I am personally 126 points behind where I should be simply because I missed 6 days. But I am not looking back. Instead, I am finding ways to make the miles up. Everyone keep riding!!
David J Clifton Mon May 28 18:36:00 2012
@gary...congratulations on being #1. Will be with you by the weekend. Great job everyone making me bike more than ever. To you mt. Bikers you rock...rode a friends old bike this weekend and i am still sore. Forgot how much fun and upper body that you use. Hope everyone had a great weekend and please keep pushing me to ride.
Jonathan Benn Mon May 28 07:53:00 2012
Out to map a ride for MHCC. A ride the club has done for years, but for which there are about 10 different places to start/finish. 30 miles of quiet roads this morning.
Gary Schyve Sun May 27 14:11:00 2012
91 miles yesterday from Middleport to Letchworth State Park along the Erie Canal path and the Genesee Valley Greenway. Had to take roads most of the last 10 miles because a bridge was out but it was a beautiful ride. It's awesome that you can go so far without any cars or noise! Met the family there and then drove home in the evening.
Jason RanDoM Thiele Sat May 26 11:55:00 2012
Autopause autoSUCKS!!!
Jonathan Benn Fri May 25 20:32:00 2012
Sign for the Black Fly Challenge MTB race will be cosing in a few days. A great way to pick up a few miles and try your hand at a little racing. Not a technical MTB race. Fire roads and even a fair amount of pavement. Lots of cyclocross bikes the last couple of years.
Gene Connor Fri May 25 16:02:00 2012
@David - I hear that. I'm a school teacher so I've been able to get a few extra miles in the last few days. I'm trying to build my fitness up so I can be ready for the big charity event in 30 days. Right now I'm just trying to get into the habit of riding every day whether I feel like it or not.
David J Clifton Fri May 25 13:10:00 2012
@gene believe the wheel was defective but yes it is the road, don't want to jinx myself but never have broken one on my mt bike. lol Up and rolling no worries, just need more time to bike.
Gene Connor Fri May 25 08:27:00 2012
@David - where are you riding that you keep breaking so many spokes? Are you on the road? Time to find a new route.
David J Clifton Thu May 24 17:57:00 2012
Another day another broken spoke:(. Time to use new wheel set at home. Disconnected brake and will head for home.
David J Clifton Thu May 24 15:29:00 2012
@Gary, that is why I mark the the valve stem on the tire and always put it back together at the mark, easier to find the debris. generally put new tubes in however I do enjoy the park glueless patchess, make it quick and easy, when you run out of tubes.
Gary Schyve Thu May 24 13:49:00 2012
@David...I actually took the tube out, pumped it up, found the air leak, then set it on top of the tire and checked it inside and out. Unfortunately I had flipped the tube over in the process and so was checking the wrong side of the tire. Ooops!! Turns out I picked up a staple along the edge of the road. From now on, I will check all the way around the tire.

Also, I am looking into the Bontrager LT3 hard case tires as per Gene's suggestion. Thanks, Gene.

Gene Connor Thu May 24 09:26:00 2012
Has anyone used warmshowers.org for long distance bike trips? I'm doing a cross counry charity ride and there will be five of us (four of us riding) and a sag wagon. Does it really work as easily as it seems to on the website? I'll be following the Adventure Cycling Association mid-America route and there looks to be a fair amount of folks on that route. Has anyone had good experiences using this network?
Gene Connor Thu May 24 09:24:00 2012
@David - they aren't too expensive. My LBS charges me about $30 each and on my commuter bike I can usually get an entire season (about 3-4,000 miles) off of them. I run the Bontrager hard case 25's. I know they make them wider too. There are probably more durable tires out there that you can get online but my LBS is one of my sponsors for my cross country ride and they suggested these and they've worked well so far.
David J Clifton Thu May 24 07:56:00 2012
@Gene thanks for the tip, still running my factory tires and I know they are a bit soft. Will make the investment soon. Thanks again.
Gene Connor Thu May 24 07:11:00 2012
Hey guys, I'm certainly not a know it all by any means but one thing I've found is that I tend to use Bontrager hard case tires for my commuting wheels and I rarely ever have a flat. They hold up pretty well through all of the Long Island crud I tend to roll over and through.
David J Clifton Thu May 24 06:02:00 2012
@Gary..i only get 25 out of my commute. As for the flats...if you take pen and mark where valve stem is on tire before taking it off, then take tissue paper rub on inside it generally rips where glass or thorn is...or if u put air in tube find hole then look at valve stem mark and compare you will find it faster too;). Enjoy yr long ride this weekend sounds great. Headed to 1000 islands Saturday night..hoping friend brings mt bike to island or I will lose Sunday riding. You all inspire me.pushing the few extra miles each day. Thanks again for sharing. Ride safe;)
Gary Schyve Thu May 24 00:27:00 2012
@David, I think we're all wondering just exactly what everyone else is doing and how they're doing it. I get about 27 or so miles every day from commuting. But then I try to add in some time during lunch and a little biking with my kids after work. I had 4 flats over the weekend (2 of them my own fault, due to inexperience) and so it goes. I don't ride to compete with you or anyone else. However, when I see you push for more, it certainly inspires me to push harder. I'll be trying something new this weekend - a ride from Middleport, NY to Letchworth State Park. Consider yourself part of my inspiration and enjoy the impact you're having on me and lots of other fellow New Yorkers.
David J Clifton Wed May 23 22:50:00 2012
Just not sure how everyone does it. I bike to and from work, ride multiple bikes. Last week broke 2 spokes on 2 bikes and got 2 flats. 4 this month alone. Made my commute longer and yet I still fall short of the miles people are logging. Today managed to log over 60 and i am feeling it. I guess that more time is needed to compete. Everyone your doing great;) will see you all out there tomorrow.
Gene Connor Wed May 23 15:58:00 2012
I took a longer commute today and managed 18.86 miles in just over an hour! Of course on the way home I happened to be riding during the only 45 minute period it rained at all on Long Island today! Good thing I packed the rain gear!
Jeff Goodrich Wed May 23 12:04:00 2012
@ Eduardo, no camping, doing www.warmshowers.org, which is folks who sign-up to host bicycle tourists. Tons of them around Lake Ontario.
Eduardo Gonzalez Tue May 22 13:15:00 2012
@Jeff, you camping?
Jonathan Benn Mon May 21 18:42:00 2012
Gentle rain started about 10 minutes into an hour long MTB ride. Actaully, made the woods quiet, a very nice ride.
Scott Adams Mon May 21 15:49:00 2012
It appears I picked the only window of rain so far today for my 5 mile ride, Rome NY. Once your wet, you can't get any wetter.
Jeff Goodrich Mon May 21 12:56:00 2012
Planning a tour around Lake Ontario at the end of June! Six days of riding!! Somewhere around 500 miles....
George Smith-Sweeper Mon May 21 09:36:00 2012
ugh its raining cats and dogs in NYC right now.....
Eduardo Gonzalez Sun May 20 22:22:00 2012
@Gary, Time to buy newer tires!
Gary Schyve Sun May 20 21:06:00 2012
4 flats in 3 days. But I will not be denied! Only one spare left in my stockpile now. Time to order more I guess.
William Hickey Sat May 19 01:11:00 2012
102 miles riding the Rochester ride for Missing and Exploited Children.
Gary Schyve Sat May 19 01:10:00 2012
@Ryan...A mile down the path, I realized I could repair it. And I did! I rode home, dude. I rode home! No beer or wings for you this week!!!

First day that I've driven to work in over 3 months, damm flu!
Gary Schyve Fri May 18 20:45:00 2012
Flat tires... I HATE when those happen! At least I was only 3 miles from home and it was a nice day.
Scott Adams Fri May 18 16:47:00 2012
Bike to Work Day was first commuting day for me this month. 37 deg F start to the day, but beautiful for the return trip.
Joe Cahill Fri May 18 09:15:00 2012
me and another coworker commuted to work today and hoping to start a trend! W00T!
Gene Connor Fri May 18 08:30:00 2012
I was completely astounded - I only saw one other bicycle commuter on my way in today - a kid on a bmx bike on his way to school. The Town of Huntington didn't even seem to promote it this year. Oh well, maybe on the way home I'll see more of our "people".
Jonathan Benn Thu May 17 22:17:00 2012
Over 240 kids cycled to school today in nearby Williamstown MA. Pretty cool.
Gene Connor Thu May 17 15:29:00 2012
Tomorrow is it folks - Ride Your Bike to Work Day - let's all get out and enjoy it! I have to do it since I'm training for a cross country charity ride that begins in 38 days. Go to www.connorsarmy.org to find out more.
Scott Adams Wed May 16 17:44:00 2012
Waited for the line of thunderstorms to pass through central NY this afternoon before getting out for a 10 miler. Still got a little wet. On the brink of Gold. Platinum will be easy.
Peter Naughton Mon May 14 23:52:00 2012
Decided to skip Five Boro this year -- went the last 2 years and ran into various problems both times, didn't feel like dealing with their "lottery" this year. Did Bike DC instead, which was yesterday. Great time. The course itself is only 22 miles, but did some more riding in/around DC afterwards to bring me up to the approx 44-mile total of the FBBT. Heard afterwards about some problems on the course, but I luckily didn't encounter any myself.
Jonathan Benn Mon May 14 21:28:00 2012
Commute and evening errands-Rain held off for the commute so one dry ride today, one wet.
Jason RanDoM Thiele Mon May 14 09:21:00 2012
162 miles in one day Andy??? Be nice to see the data on that.
Mic Sch Sun May 13 21:05:00 2012

travis montross Fri May 11 16:26:00 2012
@Jonathan it was the same way here the wind was horrible.
Jonathan Benn Fri May 11 15:51:00 2012
No rain today, but the wind forced me to cut a ride short. Didn't feel like fighting a head wind for 20 miles. Oh well
Gene Connor Wed May 9 07:28:00 2012
Ride your bike to work month has proven to have a soggy start this year. Of the four days I have ridden, I've gotten rained on three of them. But it brings me back to being a kid and riding all summer in the rain. I guess I need to get used to it since I'll be riding cross country for charity ithis summer. But a soggy ride is better than no ride at all!
Scott Adams Tue May 8 19:38:00 2012
I credit the challenge with getting me out the door for a ride after dinner, rain having discouraged me earlier. Bonus: took in some high school lacrosse mid-ride - West Genesee 9, Rome Free Academy 1 at the half.
Jason RanDoM Thiele Tue May 8 18:19:00 2012
Rode in the rain home yesterday and in the rain on the way to work today. Fenders are a must for commuting. They really help out a lot. Did something stupid today and hit the side view mirror of a car and wiped out a bit. My arm hurts but my pride hurts worse haha. Yet, I pedal on.
travis montross Tue May 8 16:37:00 2012
David its raining here too i just got back from a ride i wish i had fenders and maybe rain gear i was in shorts and a t-shirt. The bike got a need wash though haha.
David J Clifton Tue May 8 16:17:00 2012
Looks like a rainy ride home, however cannot wait to splash thru the puddles like a little kid on a new bicycle. whoever invented fenders, I thank you so very much. Maybe I can ride super fast and miss all the raindrops falling on me. be safe everyone and remember to have fun :)
Jonathan Benn Mon May 7 21:25:00 2012

yeah jason ill probably end up biking untill august on my mtn bike maybe ill get some smoother tires sometime.
Jason RanDoM Thiele Sat May 5 20:58:00 2012
Yeah Travis. Fat knobbing tires on the pavement gets old fast. Even hybrid style would be a lot better.
travis montross Sat May 5 18:42:00 2012
I need a road bike a mtn bike is not meant for the 40 miles on the road i did today.

Roads are a little rough here in Broome County, NY. Switched from road bike to cyclocross just to avoid punctures.
