Get out and ride, Darin! Cold and snow just means less people in the way and no bugs. I did a short ride on Monday night, subzero the entire time, really didn't feel that cold. An extra layer and foot warmers in my boots and I was nice and toasty. I had planned to ride further, but the trail was too snowy so I had to hit the roads and all the red lights and stop signs made my goggles fog up and ice over way too fast.
Darin Hintz Thu Jan 8 14:58:00 2015
must...... get....... on....... bike.......

On my way to collecting some more Downtown Cleveland miles.
Paula Hendryx Mon Jun 30 18:50:00 2014
I am on vacation in London. They have a bike hire program and I just logged 20 miles for Cleveland while sightseeing.!!!!
Mary Kevdzija Mon Jun 30 15:43:00 2014
Cleveland Critical Mass was a blast.
Robyn White Sat Jun 28 03:20:00 2014
Heading to Pittsburgh tomorrow -- can't wait to ride around there and log my miles for CLE! Taking my Bike Cleveland shirt just to rub it in a bit more. ;-)
Debbie Kennedy Fri Jun 27 17:26:00 2014
Jacob- Thanks, that's great news.
Shelli Snyder Fri Jun 27 17:17:00 2014
AWESOME. I am almost up to 3 additional free Pints from Over the Bar Bicycle Cafe in PITTSBURGH. And I will be in YinzerVille tomorrow night, and next Saturday...nothing says SUCK IT PGH like using CLE-counting miles to drink their beer for free. BOOM.
Jacob VanSickle Fri Jun 27 15:37:00 2014
Debbie they are. All miles logged from residents in the 6 counties of Medina, Cuyahoga, Lake, Summit, Geauga, and Lorain count towards the Rust Belt Battle.
Debbie Kennedy Fri Jun 27 15:28:00 2014
I've signed up for the challenge with my home zip code, which is a suburb of Cleveland. Are my miles counting for the Cleveland vs Pittsburgh Rust Belt Battle? I checked on the National leadership community section and I'm not on the list of Cleveland riders.
Ray S Thu Jun 26 14:38:00 2014
Where is Sandy Alomar Jr? Eddy's sold him an S-Works Tarmac that he'll be riding to work, we need his superstar representation.
Shelli Snyder Thu Jun 26 02:55:00 2014
Mary...we were there too! But got caught in the storm. Yeeee
Mary Kevdzija Wed Jun 25 22:02:00 2014
Average 15.1 mph, I tried to out run a thunder storm in the Rocky River Metroparks. Got to my car just as it started to pour down rain. For someone that's terrified of lightning, I was a conquering a fear in peddling on a day like today.
Ken Brickman Wed Jun 25 16:55:00 2014
Having so much fun. Just grabbed 3 new guys from Lake County that are doing a weekly ride. Now to get them to register for the NBC...
Jacob VanSickle Sat Jun 21 22:12:00 2014
I will drop some off at the Bike Rack on Monday.
Michael Banks Sat Jun 21 19:38:00 2014
Shelli - is there any way you can get some spoke cards to the bike rack? I can come pick them up somewhere if needed.
Shelli Snyder Sat Jun 21 04:12:00 2014
ROCK ON RICHARD! Hope you dug the event too!!
Richard Marshall Fri Jun 20 13:59:00 2014
I just joined today after attending the event last night at ABC. Very psyched to add my modest commute to the total- yet another reason to leave the car in the garage.
Darin Hintz Thu Jun 19 21:52:00 2014
Thanks Shelli...
Marty McParty Thu Jun 19 16:47:00 2014

Woot! I ask and Strava delivers! Anyone else going for Strava's PowerBar Take on the Tour Challenge?
Michael Banks Sat Jun 14 02:07:00 2014
Ugh! I'm slipping in the ratings... Strava needs to have another Challenge where you get a commemorative jersey at the end!!! xD
Darin Hintz Fri Jun 13 19:25:00 2014
TP for a whole year! Great prize LOL
Marty McParty Fri Jun 13 16:43:00 2014
It's cool endomondo, I didn't want 13 miles from my 20 mile ride yesterday included on my total. Not sure why it shows up on the team page but not my individual total, but whatever, guess I'll just have to ride another 13
Shelli Snyder Fri Jun 13 03:54:00 2014
I WANTED THE TOILET PAPER! dang.
John Kovach Fri Jun 13 02:33:00 2014
PRIZE DRAWING FINISHED: 2 Ohio Prize winners... 11 Pennsylvania winners.... that sounds like bull-cyack
Joseph Nikstenas Fri Jun 13 01:02:00 2014

Yeah I know. I just like simplicity. Thanks and unfortunately I will be missing the partay this evening : (
Have fun!

Oh, and here is my BIG IDEA... Oh, wait, Pittsburgers may be monitoring this thread so who's got an e-mail that is going to the ABC thing tonight? I'll send it via e...

Shelli Snyder Thu Jun 12 19:44:00 2014
You don't have to use any app...or you ca use the app of your choice, and then, while you are sitting here on your computer posting your hatred of the Endo app on this wall, just click that big huge LOG MILES up there and type in whatever your cyclometer/strava/appWhatev says yer miles are. Thats what i do...since. Well. i dont like the Endo App. ha
Marty McParty Thu Jun 12 15:55:00 2014
I've had no problems with it. My only issue is the auto-pause sometimes takes a few seconds to engage at lights but besides that, it's been spot on for me
Ray S Thu Jun 12 15:51:00 2014
You don't have to use the Endo app, if what you want to use supports gpx/tcx/fit export. Strava has GPX export, which you can then import into Endo. Yes, it's more work, but it takes all of about 20 seconds. I use an Edge 500 and load it to Garmin Connect, Strava and here, plus I also keep a copy of the file for safekeeping. I ran the Endo app on my iPhone 4S for my 63 and 87 miles rides over the weekend, distance wise it was almost exactly the same as my Edge. I deleted it and reloaded from my Edge to capture HR and cadence data though.
Darin Hintz Thu Jun 12 15:06:00 2014
Endomondo app is effing up all over the place. Going back to Strava after we kick Pitts ass.
Shelli Snyder Wed Jun 11 14:50:00 2014
@Laura & all: You can get the cards next Wednesday at The ABC's for NBC social event! Both the paper cards and spoke cards will be available in addition to a demo of Endo, Q&A and HH prices on drinks all night from ABC! See the side --->
and RSVP to https://www.facebook.com/events/201572486662504/ :) BRING SOME NOOBS!
Laura Losey Faulkner Tue Jun 10 11:52:00 2014
I still find very active cyclists that know nothing about the challeng. I am carring some of the NBC/Bike Cleveland info cards around with me as I ride. I hand them out to other cyclists I meet while riding. We need more riders to do the same. Where can we get more cards?
Nancy S. Levin Tue Jun 10 01:27:00 2014
gotta kick some stiller butt.
Shelli Snyder Sat Jun 7 13:54:00 2014
@walter & @ michael....SOON...www.rustcrown.org will resolve to this: https://sites.google.com/site/rustbeltbattle/ which, will be eventually "prettier" looking...
and soon, the FB page will be public too...which iFrames em in as well.

HEY! any google sites saavy peeps who wanna make that site look pretty...PM me on facebook. hahah for now? its just gonna be a quick link to comparing :)

Shelli Snyder Sat Jun 7 13:53:00 2014
I avoid the towpath on my roadie...mostly due to having the clean the heck out of it. (this also applies to the rest of the bikes. lol)
Ray S Sat Jun 7 04:19:00 2014
I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that my Allez cost a lot more than my hybrid ;) Same reason I didn't ride it all winter while the roads were smothered in salt (even though there was never enough snow to justify it)
Marty McParty Sat Jun 7 02:04:00 2014
I've ridden on the towpath with an aluminum roadie on 23s for 3 years now between CLE and AKR. I avoid it right after rain or have ridden slowly and gone "off-line" at certain points to avoid ruts but it can be done.
Laura Losey Faulkner Sat Jun 7 01:57:00 2014
One thing I like about the tow path. It drains fast, even after a heavy rain. I usually ride a hybrid but I see a lot of road bikes on the trail too.
Ray S Fri Jun 6 22:17:00 2014
The towpath isn't road bike friendly, at least not for mine. Maybe I'll take that route on the hybrid this weekend since it looks like it may be wet.
Michael Banks Fri Jun 6 16:22:00 2014
@Walter Chapman Switch to the National Challange View (at the top) then leaderboard then communities (cities?) then you have to page through until you find Pittsburgh...

@Ray S Towpath trail? :)

Laura Losey Faulkner Fri Jun 6 02:26:00 2014
It's good to see honor in an honor system. Confirmation that Cleveland cyclists are the best!
Walter Chapman Thu Jun 5 23:45:00 2014
How do I track Pittsburgh vs. Cleveland
Ray S Thu Jun 5 19:19:00 2014
I'm down in the Akron area, I don't get up to the big city very often ;) However, with Scarlett in town, it may be worth the ride :D One of these days I'm going to find a route so I can ride up, dip a wheel in the lake and ride back. I'd like to fly across the lake, but E.T. already phoned home with someone else.
John Kovach Thu Jun 5 18:42:00 2014
Marty McParty has become a comparative unit of measurement this year... now Dixon can become a measure of speed and distance... "Nice ride today... what was your Dixon, though"?
Laura Losey Faulkner Thu Jun 5 15:45:00 2014
I just pedaled to 58,000 feet and crossed over Lake Erie..."James Dixon Style". I knew cycling would show me the world without limitations. Thanks James Dixon!
Shelli Snyder Thu Jun 5 14:40:00 2014
Any idea when they are updating the whole prize thing?
John Kovach Thu Jun 5 13:19:00 2014
I just cycled to work "James Dixon Style"..! I simply pedaled 55 miles per hour! - ...man... why didn't I think of this before.... thanks James Dixon !
Warren Reinhard Thu Jun 5 10:59:00 2014
+1 Michael
Michael Banks Thu Jun 5 02:56:00 2014
Nice work, Michael!
Michael Ryan Mullins Wed Jun 4 12:55:00 2014
Woohoo! My 690 mile solo Tour de Lake Erie has launched me into the lead...but not for long, as I settle back into my measly commute today. So much fun while it lasted. Ride on!
Tony Lee Mon Jun 2 23:14:00 2014
Strava.com has a lot of Cleveland riders if you could get them to do both.
Lisa Freebairn-Tarr Sat May 31 22:40:00 2014
Sadly lots of people aren't logging miles in Clevetown! I end up turning around if I forget my phone now...even if I am only going 4 and a half miles to work.....
Jacob VanSickle Sat May 31 16:02:00 2014
PIttsburgh currently has 32,000 more miles. Who isn't logging their miles in CLE?
Walter Chapman Sat May 31 00:52:00 2014
Pittsburgh how many miles vs Cleveland
Shelli Snyder Fri May 30 14:40:00 2014
Ray...We have spoke cards being made (available soon!) & we also have the "flyer" version of the spoke cards. I can get some to you...if you are located around the city?and there will be a June 19th Bike Cleveland Rust Belt Battle of the Bikes social at ABC Uptown (TBA)

I like your idea about the stickers too!

Ray S Thu May 29 20:11:00 2014
We need some NBC stickers to put on the bollards at the trailheads, or maybe get the MetroParks/Towpath people to post something on their boards. I see lots of other riders out on the bike & hike trail and in the valley (Summit County area) but don't know if any are on here. It's a bit difficult to discuss things when climbing 300 feet up out of the valley. There are the "cool kids" who can't be bothered to log their miles here and/or think they have to use the Endo app to do so. I know not everyone needs the same level of motivation, but the NBC makes me ride further and Strava makes me ride faster, logging my data in a couple extra places really isn't that difficult, it all loads direct from my Garmin anyway. Now if only my LBS could make my rear derailleur stop acting up and I could ride without wasting energy cursing that thing ;)
Joseph Nikstenas Thu May 29 19:00:00 2014
Lost out on 120 miles last week being sick three days off from work and then 40 more for the Monday holiday! Got some catching up to do!
Jacob VanSickle Thu May 29 17:50:00 2014
Pittsburgh has over 130,000 miles. One key piece in their lead is that they have over 1200 people registered. We can catch up, we just need to get everyone who is riding a bike in Greater Cleveland to register and start logging their miles. Spread the word.
J.J. Bechhold Thu May 29 16:14:00 2014
What is the update??? What is the mileage for both cities?
Rickshaw Willie Thu May 29 11:45:00 2014
Maybe just maybe I can figure this out. It looks like I'm on the right path. :-)
Shelli Snyder Wed May 28 15:23:00 2014
A week baggin' peaks REALLY hurts my EndoStats.
(but hey! Only 21 more to go! ADKs!)

PS...WELCOME TO POHR SF!

Hey Cleveland Challengers. I am riding for Cleveland but when I log in, it takes me to the national page. My zip code is included in my account.... Anybody have any idea why I'm having a hard time being included in the Cleveland Page.
Josh James Sun May 25 00:00:00 2014
Ya it was both chilly and super windy today. Crazy good workout though!!
Gary Sampson Sat May 24 20:52:00 2014
who are these "jammy buggers" anyway?!? you just wait!
Ray S Sat May 24 19:37:00 2014
Did I sleep through the summer? I had to break the winter gear back out today. On the plus side, there were zero bugs flying around.
Marty Cader Thu May 22 19:57:00 2014
Michael, Glad you're OK.
Michael Banks Thu May 22 14:17:00 2014
I got into a hit and run with a dark minivan at Lake and Cornwall in Rocky River around 6:30pm yesterday (05/21). The driver hooked a right turn onto Cornwall off of Lake with no blinker. I'm reasonably certain he was on the phone too. I did not get the plate, all I know is that it was a fairly new looking dark (black?) minivan; maybe a Chrysler, not sure. If anyone saw anything and/or hears anything, please speak up. I am not injured but quite ticked off. Thanks.
Ryan Paul Wed May 21 12:19:00 2014

Josh James Mon May 19 22:42:00 2014
I have nearly stopped using my car altogether. I'm probably putting it up for sale because I use it so little.

Schralpin all the gnar lines in Brunswick!!! 330 YO!!
Marty McParty Sun May 18 03:45:00 2014
I did some math(first time in years) and our top ten at 10:46pm Friday evening had 8,019 points compared to Schlitzburghs 7,729. So our front page is almost 300 miles ahead of there's!!! But we are down riders. And Pittsburgh is a much more centralized city so it's easier to ride to where you need to be making it much easier to reduce those goose-egg days. If we have any hope at this rust belt crown, we need more riders and we need those riders to put in at least a mile(or more) each and every day. Some of us(most of us) consider that a lot of fun! Lets do this Clevelanders!!! It's a 5 month challenge, we have plenty of time. Lets be the tortoise to their hare!!!
Marty McParty Sat May 17 19:31:00 2014
Step 1: Ride em'bike, many, many mile
Step 2: Make'em friends. Tell them to join our tribe

10 imitators my friend.... 10 imitators
Darin Hintz Sat May 17 18:49:00 2014
I just checked out the Pittsburgh stats on their Endomondo site.
They have like 10 Marty Mc Party's to our 1 and the top 10 Pittsburgh teams have at least 6,900 points. What do we need to do to start kicking some ass?! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Ray S Sat May 17 15:41:00 2014
I'll have to go down to the basement and ride my bike around in a circle so I can say I rode my bike to work today :D
Darin Hintz Sat May 17 14:39:00 2014
Happy BTWD everybody!!!!!!
Denise Kean Sat May 17 14:36:00 2014

Ray S Sat May 10 13:17:00 2014
Nothing wrong with us prissy Garmin folks ;) (I do log daily) I use the Endo app occasionally, but my Edge does a much better job.
Jacob VanSickle Sat May 10 05:01:00 2014
We need more miles and riders. Tell your friends about the challenge. Pittsburgh is one big hill. We can't lose to them.
Shelli Snyder Sat May 10 04:19:00 2014
Right...(Ray/Marty)...and its not really sandbagging (ok maybe..but who cares :)...if you ride the entire week, but dont log it until the end of the week, as long as you are entering them per the day you ride, you are only helping yourself (and CLE) because you then get the points for the days you rode...
20 Challenge points are awarded for each day you ride at least 1 mile
1 Challenge point is awarded for each mile ridden
So, by putting 100 miles in on friday, when you actually rode 20 miles for 5 days..
you are only getting 120 points.
but if you enter them on the days you rode, you are then getting 100 points for the miles, and 100 for the days.
so..REMEMBER THAT SANDBAGGERS! *grin*
Marty McParty Sat May 10 00:03:00 2014
Sandbagging is legal. And if it gets those prissy Garmin only folks to actually log their miles once a week to help our battle .vs Schlitzburgh, then so be it.
Sean Byrne Fri May 9 18:15:00 2014
Don't sandbag...
Ray S Fri May 9 16:44:00 2014
You get the 20 points per day you log at least 1 mile, no matter when you log it. So, you can log them all at the end of the month if you choose, just be sure you record them by day, don't just say you rode 500 miles on a single day.
Shelli Snyder Fri May 9 15:23:00 2014
@ Jim...awesome!! Hope to see you in the morning!
And great on the mile tally! and note: to gain more points (not just miles...) each day you log, you get yada yada points. if you log em all at once on one day, you only get points for that day plus the miles.
stretch yer miles to the max :)
Jim Pintchuk Fri May 9 14:03:00 2014
Im looking forward to Riding 33 miles to Work on Bike Day May 17th. I will tally up my rides from the GPS for May with Cleveland Touring Club. Hopefully if we all do that we can beat Pittsburgh.
Angie Schmitt Fri May 9 13:57:00 2014
I just read something that said Cleveland was just a little behind Pittsburgh now. Is that true?
Shelli Snyder Fri May 9 01:51:00 2014

Good eye Ray. Thanks for letting the us know! Welcome to the Cleveland area challenge.
Ray S Tue May 6 18:14:00 2014
There are quite a few riders in the area that are not in the Cleveland challenge. Apparently there is a glitch in the system which is keeping people in the wrong one if they signed up prior to a community being created or updated to include different regions. I was in the Columbus group all last year and this year as well. When I started noticing familiar names on the Ohio leaderboard that weren't on my local one, I found them over here. I had to edit my profile to remove my zip code and then add it back in so I could get moved here. I left a comment on the Columbus board before I left and also on the national one, so maybe others will follow suit and get picked up in Cleveland.
Jacob VanSickle Tue May 6 17:52:00 2014
Chris, no limit on team size this year.
Chris Bongorno Tue May 6 14:49:00 2014
No limit to team sizes this year?
Gary Sampson Tue May 6 13:49:00 2014
Oh yes indeed Jacob, I will log those TOSRV miles! Columbus to Portsmouth and back...great ride, as long as you don't get rained on in 50 degree weather.
John Kovach Tue May 6 04:01:00 2014
That is truly great!... thanks for the "Heads Up" Cassandra
Casandra Vasu Tue May 6 03:25:00 2014

Frank Jones Mon May 5 22:17:00 2014
Nice 20-mile ride on the Towpath today. C'mon, the weather doesn't get any better! That trail should have been jammed up like an LA freeway during rush hour!

We are only 7 away from being tied with PGH in Bike Challenge participants. Spread the word, challenge your co-workers, friends, and family.
Shelli Snyder Fri Apr 25 15:28:00 2014
So...you know what will log some good miles:
Pan Ohio Hope Ride. (w00t!)
GOBA | Dog Days | Sunday in June | TOSVR | MS150
or.... BIKING TO PGH. :)
Some of us are doing the 139mi trek August 24th, to attend the Aug 25th Pedal PGH event. (note: B pace/find yer own way back/place to stay/etc...)
but if you wanna century plus on a what is sure to be a scorching hot Saturday...we are leaving bright and early that Saturday morning :)
(and we will stop for Ice Cream and BEER along the way)
Benjamin Stewart Fri Apr 25 01:53:00 2014
I will do anything to beat Pittsburgh. I may even give my (hopefully temporary) daily commute from Detroit Shoreway to Strongsville a try on two wheels a few times. :)

I won't have the same amount of free time that I did during last year's Bike Challenge but I still plan on biking as much as I can (and everyday too, by the way). I just wanted to let some people know in case they thought I was slacking. ;) Good luck everyone!

Ive never used the calorie thing on here...actually. i havent used much other than the mile logging, though i think last year i logged the time too..i cant quite remember.
Laura Losey Faulkner Tue Apr 22 17:50:00 2014
My calories burned calculation is not working. I do not use the endomono app. Putting miles in manually worked fine last year. I'm pedaling my ass off and I want those numbers. If you enter your miles manually check your Challenge profile and see it its working for you. I had Jacob contact Endomono for a fix early last week. No word back from Endomondo on getting this worked out. Maybe if enough complaints are reported they will fix this.
Jacob VanSickle Mon Apr 21 20:02:00 2014
Dennis, post the question here http://endomondo.helpserve.com/Tickets/Submit. Select NBC support. My guess would be that imported miles are not automatically associated with the challenge for some reason.
Dennis Litto Mon Apr 21 14:50:00 2014
Anyone else having problems uploading with their Garmin? I have the 500 and can upload to my personal page but it will not let me u[pload to the challenge. My plugin is up to date.
Jacob VanSickle Mon Apr 21 04:15:00 2014
There is now a Facebook event for the Bike Challenge in CLE - http://goo.gl/KoexK. Check it, and feel free to use it to talk some trash. Bike Cleveland will also use it (along with the news section to the left) to provide updates and future Bike Challenge events.
Leah Sharkey Sat Apr 19 16:14:00 2014
Yeah Shelli, I only have a 2.5 mile commute, I try to keep it low key (read slow) so I don't get too overheated on the way in. I am immune to those who ride faster than me.
Fri Apr 18 00:23:00 2014
Shelli, went out yesterday and 5 mins in started to pour.. that was the most miserable 2 miles in my life. Got 6+ in tonight so i feel better about that. I think we have a mutual friend, i work with Donna B.
Shelli Snyder Thu Apr 17 14:12:00 2014
OMG Leah...I made up for my IdontWannaRide10miInTheRain yesterday...this morning. Some messenger-ish dude silently challenged me down Euclid. Let's just say I had to use more deodorant upon work arrival.
(let's also say that next time? He can pull me 3/4 of the way vs. the other way around. jerk. ha)
Shelli Snyder Thu Apr 17 14:11:00 2014

We were motivated by snow in the forecast to ride yesterday. Cold toes and fingertips for a few miles, even with full shoecovers, gloves and wool tights. But the roads were clear, cars were few, and it turned out to be a fine first ride of spring. Plus it helps mentally since 4 inches of new snow fall in time for the Monday commute.
Jacob VanSickle Tue Mar 25 01:22:00 2014
Paul, you can create a team by clicking the "leaderboard" above, then about halfway down the page selecting "teams," then on the right there will be a link to "create or join a team". You can invite peopel to join your team once it is created. Teams can be any number of individuals.

Darin... currently you can view side by side at www.rustcrown.org, (the FB page then will have the other stuffs...) tho the regional points are only extracted and reported at the end of each month...tho, in the spirit of COMPETITION COMING TO A CLOSE, i am sure we can give a little push for a week out update ;)

The overall National Bike Challenge leader has over 12,000 miles recorded. That's over 80 miles per day average from May 1 till now. AVERAGE! Is this even a possibility? I'm as amazed as I am skeptical.

I'm guessing someone went through the leaderboard, changed to 'challenge period' and then started adding up all the points.

John....team miles count just like other miles. im confused on the sum vs. etc...
can you clarify?

ray...so, the points you see, i am assuming, are for PGH proper and those registered in it vs. CLE proper and those registered in it. the overall points are per region, which NBC unfortunately does not show. (we are hoping next year they will up in those handy little infographics on the landing pages)
so, bike CLE and bike PGH have to manually go in once a month and extract the data and add it up.
although i do not see it on the FB page: http://www.facebook.com/rustcrown, i do know that as of 9/9 CLE had: 1,243,186 pts...and PGH as of 9/12 had 1,407,815....at that time, we had more miles.
but? it is regional points that count.

Kevin...YOU ROCK!

UPDATE on the RustCrown "ride" to the crowning...we are looking at the 18th of Oct currently, as the 4th is not a do-able date. we are waiting on PGH's availability to start figuring the shebang out.
if you are interested in riding and have not yet, please email me at [email protected]
this will be an "MS150" type pace with an average over the 70some miles at about 15 or so...non sagged, mostly roads, and we have to figure out our own ways of returning.
we would probably leave mid morning.
oh? and we are planning on some media :)

According to Pittsburgh page, we are behind by over 160,000 points. They have 190 more riders than we do. What is the available pool of riders for each group? I'm curious of the percentage of registrations for each.
-
Has anyone else noticed that the Cleveland group has 612,594 of the 986,806 total miles for the state of Ohio? The Columbus area is pretty bike friendly from what I hear, they even have a bike share program, how can they plus the rest of the state be so far behind?

It seems as if Endomondo is not logging my miles properly. Anyone else have this problem? I am far to low on the leaderboard for the miles I ride, not that I care but I would like them to be added to the CLE totals. When I log them they initially come up as runnung and I have to change them to cycling. The milles show up on my workout page but not my statistics. Solution?

So...for some of our longer distance riding peeps...who would be interested in riding to rep CLE for the #RustCrown award event that is tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 4th?
The "soft" details:
Leave CLE approx 07:30...ride to Youngstown (think Pedal to the Point type pace / avs over 70ish miles = 15)
PGH leaves their town same time. We meet in the YO.
Event happens
Afternoon celebration happens.
Press stuff happens.
We then hop in our pre-arranged carpools (this may or may not involve renting one ways...)
return to CLE early evening.
If you are interested, email me: [email protected]
details are still being worked on behind the scenes and more info in the coming weeks...
Ray S Fri Sep 6 14:02:00 2013
Thanks for the tips, looks like Abbey is the way to go. Rather than an out and back, I may head west from Edgewater over to the Valley Parkway Trail and follow that and the road until it eventually puts me out on Riverview Rd, then 82 over to the bike & hike trail. Looks pretty easy on the map, then again, I did end up in Hartville a couple weeks ago when I was heading for Hudson ;)

Good call, Andy. One note: Abbey Rd. is closed to motor traffic due to Innerbelt Construction. However, bikes and pedestrians can still cross from West 14th to W. 25th. Just follow the pedestrian detour through the construction site (as you come up 14th, either hug the right hand side as you pass Fairfield in front of the Orthodox church or turn right on Fairfield, left on 11th, then left on Abbey in front of Sokolowski's).

By the bye, guess which city just took the lead in the Rust Belt Challenge? Hint: it begins with "CLEVE" and ends with "LAND". Let's keep up the pace, amigos!

I live right up near Edgewater park, and usually avoid Denison because of pavement quality issues, and the enormously confusing traffic lights near I71 east of 65th. Still, roads around here aren't often very busy, and most drivers from the neighborhood are nice to me on my bike, so the whole area feels at least somewhat bike friendly.

I would suggest taking the towpath to it's end on w 14th, and heading north to Ohio City, probably via Abbey Rd , then using any street besides w 25th to get north to Franklin. Franklin is a great shady avenue to ride down, and will take you to 65th for the park tunnel there.

Ray S Thu Sep 5 18:13:00 2013
I think I may ride up to Edgewater Park (and back) on Saturday, from the Akron area. It looks like I can take the Towpath up to Harvard, then roads the rest of the way. Harvard to Dennison to West 65th. Anyone have any tips, gotchas or things to watch out for once I hit those streets? I'm not familiar with any of those roads, but Google Maps has them flagged as "bicycle friendly." I ride the roads down here all the time, just curious of the conditions up there. I'll probably jump on the towpath at the Memorial Parkway trailhead in Akron if anyone is interested in tagging along.

Very impressive ride Shelli, did you do it solo? Now that you know how to get there, we should plan a group ride out there on a Saturday late next month to celebrate our victory, with a return trip on Sunday to increase our lead. I'd be willing to do a round trip ride, anyone else?

it was 142. remember, you get 20 points per day...plus 1 point per mile. (IE: 162)
And, well. it wouldnt have taken me all that long had i not: started later than i planned (oops), spent wayyyyyy too much time shootin the shizzie with the cool guys at Kent Cycle, (but they rocked!), stopped at a few farmers markets (FRY PIES!), gotten a little off course in Beaver Falls (btw? the Ohio River Front Trail does not exist yet, thank you Ride w GPS. But hey, I had my own version of a cyclocross course for a good 40 minutes), and a few missing or turned road signs caused a few not missing, yet turned shellis...but all in all it wasnt bad. it SHOULD have taken me about 10.5 hours counting stops...but. well. shizzie (and fry pies) happen. ha
FABULOUS route however. minus the impromptu cross course. *grin*

Keith, that is no longer the case. They changed that rule from last year...it is 20 bonus points per day no matter what type of riding (anything over 1 mile)
and Ray has it right...you can log (4) rides of 25 miles for one day or (1) ride of 100 for one day, and it is still 120 points total.

When I was at the bike shop the other day, I picked up a bike user map from "Switching Gears." It shows all the local trails and has rankings for the roads based on how comfortable they are to ride on. They also have the maps online at http://switching-gears.org/ If you ride the road, or want to, check it out.
Ray S Mon Aug 26 15:25:00 2013
You get 20 per day you ride 1 mile or more, and 1 point per mile no matter what kind, sport, transport or mountain bike. You do see some that inadvertently log that they made 4 rides of 100 miles each instead of 4 of 25 though.
Shelli Snyder Mon Aug 26 12:32:00 2013
PS. i scored CLE 162 miles on Saturday. SUCK IT PGH! (oh wait. i rode TO PGH. and ok. well, they were nice to me there. but i still wouldn't let them take my miles...*grin*)
Now, if only we can get CASSIE SCHUMACKER (sp) to log her RAAM miles....
Shelli Snyder Mon Aug 26 12:29:00 2013
No problem Lindsay :)

Plus, you get bonus points for every day that you ride and more points seem to be awarded for each transport mile as compared to workout miles.

Lindsay, comparing your miles to your coworkers, are your 200 spread over fewer days? example: weekend warrior does a century on saturday in addition to his typical 40 miler on wednesday night and bonus 20 to the bike shop and back friday.. total miles: 160. total points: 220 for the week.
commuter kelly does her back and forth to work: 5 days of 15 miles per day plus 25 on saturday's c pace club ride and 10 on sunday running errands.
Total miles: 110. Total points: 250.

So, depends on the # of days & the miles together...

Lindsay Smetana Fri Aug 23 01:18:00 2013
Someone might have brought this up already but I don't know if the points are keeping up with the miles. I have almost 200 more miles than a co-worker but he's pretty far ahead of me on the leaderboard with points. I don't care about that but it would be something to consider if we're comparing the points we have with PGH.

After the first couple of times, the leg anger goes away. If my legs still felt the way they did after the first time I rode 40 miles, I would not ride as much as I do. My legs scream when I'm riding and pushing myself, but once the bike is back on the hooks in the garage, they shut up. Every now and then they scream longer, but that's usually only when I switch bikes.

My community is slacking. Only 11 of the 12 people registered (really? only 12???) have logged anything in the challenge. There is a 3500 point difference between 1st and 2nd. I'm the only platinum, only the top two have reached gold. only the top 5 have silver, only the top 6 have bronze. I guess my fellow Cuyahoga Fallsites are too busy watching the dams get removed.

I got my road bike back last night, after a few days waiting for a tune-up due to a broken rear shift cable. In hindsight, I should have just fixed the cable and saved some time, but oh well, at least the rest of the year should be maintenance free. I have to do about 400 miles in the next 8 days to achieve my goal of "more miles each month during the NBC" It looks like the weather will cooperate.

Logged 197.25 miles for Cleveland on my 2-week working trip to Michigan. It's a cycling paradise here with (separated) bike paths along every major drag, mostly flat, few stop signs or lights, and the Lake Michigan beach only 7-8 miles away. I was up early getting those miles in before breakfast every day to beat the heat and what little rain we got. Coming home later today.

Come on, Cleveland, if I can log these miles every day with no smartphone away from home, so can you! Just think of how accomplished you'll feel when you look at your totals at the end of the challenge!

The Cleveland section of Lakeshore is (slowly) being rebuilt. A lot of that project is dependent on the completion of the storm sewer surge tunnel bore. Hopefully, by next summer we'll have a smooth route along the lake from Headlands S.P. to downtown (well with the exception of the North Marginal).

AND talking about bad roads, yesterday I took Lakeshore Blvd Eastbound from MLK to Lloyd Rd. Bratenahl and Euclid were great. Traveling in between through Cleveland was terrible. Luckily no flats or accidents. Just very rough.

Mark...sorry to hear that! It's a mine field going down Euclid (and especially in the rain) near the construction and the defective concrete zone (aka: CSU/30th)
in those instances, I hate to say it, but I ride the bus lane if it is clear. It is not worth damaging my bike or myself until they repair it. I have known too many flats, and injuries westbound in that area...

I hit a big hole today in the rain by Shaker Lakes Nature Center, flipped over handle bars and dove 20 feet on asphalt. I don't recommend it.
With roads like ours, you really have to be careful in the rain. But it's rained 16 days in a row so can't quite avoid getting caught now and again.

Well. i dont like the Endo App. ha
Marty McParty Wed Jun 12 10:55:00 2013
I've had no problems with it. My only issue is the auto-pause sometimes takes a few seconds to engage at lights but besides that, it's been spot on for me
Ray S Wed Jun 12 10:51:00 2013
Darin Hintz Wed Jun 12 10:06:00 2013
Endomondo app is effing up all over the place. Going back to Strava after we kick Pitts ass.

I avoid the towpath on my roadie...mostly due to having the clean the heck out of it. (this also applies to the rest of the bikes. lol)
Ray S Thu Jun 6 23:19:00 2013
I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that my Allez cost a lot more than my hybrid ;) Same reason I didn't ride it all winter while the roads were smothered in salt (even though there was never enough snow to justify it)
Marty McParty Thu Jun 6 21:04:00 2013
I've ridden on the towpath with an aluminum roadie on 23s for 3 years now between CLE and AKR. I avoid it right after rain or have ridden slowly and gone "off-line" at certain points to avoid ruts but it can be done.
Laura Losey Faulkner Thu Jun 6 20:57:00 2013
One thing I like about the tow path. It drains fast, even after a heavy rain. I usually ride a hybrid but I see a lot of road bikes on the trail too.
Ray S Thu Jun 6 17:17:00 2013
The towpath isn't road bike friendly, at least not for mine. Maybe I'll take that route on the hybrid this weekend since it looks like it may be wet.
Michael Banks Thu Jun 6 11:22:00 2013
@Walter Chapman Switch to the National Challange View (at the top) then leaderboard then communities (cities?) then you have to page through until you find Pittsburgh...

@Ray S Towpath trail? :)

Ray S Wed Jun 5 14:19:00 2013
I'm down in the Akron area, I don't get up to the big city very often ;) However, with Scarlett in town, it may be worth the ride :D One of these days I'm going to find a route so I can ride up, dip a wheel in the lake and ride back. I'd like to fly across the lake, but E.T. already phoned home with someone else.

I like your idea about the stickers too!

Ray S Wed May 29 15:11:00 2013
We need some NBC stickers to put on the bollards at the trailheads, or maybe get the MetroParks/Towpath people to post something on their boards.
Joseph Nikstenas Wed May 29 14:00:00 2013
Lost out on 120 miles last week being sick three days off from work and then 40 more for the Monday holiday! Got some catching up to do!
Jacob VanSickle Wed May 29 12:50:00 2013
Pittsburgh has over 130,000 miles. One key piece in their lead is that they have over 1200 people registered. We can catch up, we just need to get everyone who is riding a bike in Greater Cleveland to register and start logging their miles. Spread the word.
J.J. Bechhold Wed May 29 11:14:00 2013

Thanks.

We need more miles and riders. Tell your friends about the challenge. Pittsburgh is one big hill. We can't lose to them.
Shelli Snyder Thu May 9 23:19:00 2013
Right...(Ray/Marty)...and its not really sandbagging (ok maybe..but who cares :)...if you ride the entire week, but dont log it until the end of the week, as long as you are entering them per the day you ride, you are only helping yourself (and CLE) because you then get the points for the days you rode...
*grin*

Sandbagging is legal. And if it gets those prissy Garmin only folks to actually log their miles once a week to help our battle .vs Schlitzburgh, then so be it.
Sean Byrne Thu May 9 13:15:00 2013
Don't sandbag...
Ray S Thu May 9 11:44:00 2013
You get the 20 points per day you log at least 1 mile, no matter when you log it. So, you can log them all at the end of the month if you choose, just be sure you record them by day, don't just say you rode 500 miles on a single day.
Shelli Snyder Thu May 9 10:23:00 2013
@ Jim...awesome!! Hope to see you in the morning!
And great on the mile tally! and note: to gain more points (not just miles...) each day you log, you get yada yada points. if you log em all at once on one day, you only get points for that day plus the miles.
stretch yer miles to the max :)
Jim Pintchuk Thu May 9 09:03:00 2013
Im looking forward to Riding 33 miles to Work on Bike Day May 17th. I will tally up my rides from the GPS for May with Cleveland Touring Club. Hopefully if we all do that we can beat Pittsburgh.

Good eye Ray. Thanks for letting the us know! Welcome to the Cleveland area challenge.
Ray S Mon May 6 13:14:00 2013
There are quite a few riders in the area that are not in the Cleveland challenge.
Jacob VanSickle Mon May 6 12:52:00 2013
Chris, no limit on team size this year.
Chris Bongorno Mon May 6 09:49:00 2013
No limit to team sizes this year?
Gary Sampson Mon May 6 08:49:00 2013
Oh yes indeed Jacob, I will log those TOSRV miles! Columbus to Portsmouth and back...great ride, as long as you don't get rained on in 50 degree weather.

Pan Ohio Hope Ride. (w00t!)

Ive never used the calorie thing on here...actually. i havent used much other than the mile logging, though i think last year i logged the time too..i cant quite remember.
Laura Losey Faulkner Mon Apr 22 12:50:00 2013
My calories burned calculation is not working. I do not use the endomono app. Putting miles in manually worked fine last year. I'm pedaling my ass off and I want those numbers. If you enter your miles manually check your Challenge profile and see it its working for you. I had Jacob contact Endomono for a fix early last week. No word back from Endomondo on getting this worked out. Maybe if enough complaints are reported they will fix this.
Jacob VanSickle Sun Apr 21 15:02:00 2013
Dennis, post the question here http://endomondo.helpserve.com/Tickets/Submit. Select NBC support. My guess would be that imported miles are not automatically associated with the challenge for some reason.
Dennis Litto Sun Apr 21 09:50:00 2013
Anyone else having problems uploading with their Garmin? I have the 500 and can upload to my personal page but it will not let me u[pload to the challenge. My plugin is up to date.

There is now a Facebook event for the Bike Challenge in CLE - http://goo.gl/KoexK. Check it, and feel free to use it to talk some trash. Bike Cleveland will also use it (along with the news section to the left) to provide updates and future Bike Challenge events.
Leah Sharkey Fri Apr 19 11:14:00 2013
Yeah Shelli, I only have a 2.5 mile commute, I try to keep it low key (read slow) so I don't get too overheated on the way in. I am immune to those who ride faster than me.
Chris Brasdovich Wed Apr 17 19:23:00 2013
Shelli, went out yesterday and 5 mins in started to pour.. that was the most miserable 2 miles in my life. Got 6+ in tonight so i feel better about that. I think we have a mutual friend, i work with Donna B.

Michael Lannoch Sat Jun 30 19:13:00 2012
Well, it's been a while since I've been called by my last name by a stranger, but I definitelly feel a re-new sense of urgency to ride more than my amature ass has ridden before after that response to what was meant to be encouragement. Miles baby, miles.
Gary Sampson Sat Jun 30 18:57:00 2012
Wow, Ponti! Totally provoking everyone...!
Michael Lannoch Sat Jun 30 18:50:00 2012
Haha. Are you kidding? I'd love to but I'd lose my consistent paycheck in the process of trying. Seriously though, it's awesome to see what you're doing on the national scale. Keep going!!!
Emily Ponti Sat Jun 30 15:50:00 2012
Lannoch - think you'll be able to catch me?!
Michael Lannoch Sat Jun 30 11:44:00 2012
Emily is ROCKIN' it!!!! Good motivation for next month.
Shelli Snyder Thu Jun 28 22:18:00 2012
Did ya dig our Hey Baby cat call Chris? lol...Figured it was our turn to shout out. ha!
Chris Bongorno Thu Jun 28 13:51:00 2012
Great seeing the wheels & heels ladies out on Franklin last night!
Carl Persson Wed Jun 27 17:12:00 2012
I love logging my miles in here. I use "MapMyRun" app for all running and cycling acticvities adn just transfer things over, which seems to work well. My Garmin is OK... but doesn't hook into satellites as quickly.
Carl Persson Wed Jun 27 17:08:00 2012
@Bruce - loving the Euclid corridor too. I dont have too much issue with vehicles cutting me off - EXCEPT around the Clinic - ironic enough. Keep riding safe!
Shelli Snyder Wed Jun 27 09:53:00 2012
2 wheels & heels ladies ride tonight. XYZ at 6...we leave at 7! Social ride to encourage ladies to ride in the city. a maintenance demo, shopping discounts and cupcakes included! :)

John Kovach Sun Jun 24 13:25:00 2012
awesome Kim!
Kim MacDonald Sat Jun 23 18:26:00 2012
Back from GOBA - had a great trip, lots of rollers and lots of fun people. Hope these numbers add to the cause
Sean Byrne Sat Jun 23 10:21:00 2012
Phil, why use an app that is innaccurate AND extra work? The endo app is pretty good,so long as you have cell service.
Michael Lannoch Fri Jun 22 19:27:00 2012
Got about 13 miles into the Friday evening ride and found myself with a thirst that water and electrolytes sports drink couldn't satisfy... Thanks heavens they still serve beer to cyclists... Nothing a few dortmunders won't handle before soldiering on.
Bruce Andrew Jamieson Fri Jun 22 10:44:00 2012
I've been loving the Euclid corridor since they put it in, but mostly because traffic is so light. Having a bike lane is nice but it does give a false sense of security since it doesn't prevent cars from turning right into your lane. I deal with that almost daily!
Michael Lannoch Fri Jun 22 07:54:00 2012
I would just add another 11 miles as a sport ride or something so you get your points. That does sound really annoying though.
Phil Dennison Fri Jun 22 07:50:00 2012
This import thing is driving me nuts. Don't know why when I import .gpx files to Endomondo it doesn't seem to read them properly. My Cyclemeter app is showing me with 329.87 miles for June so far; imported onto Endomondo, it's showing 318 miles. I want my 11 miles back!
Gary Sampson Wed Jun 20 21:02:00 2012
Solstice ride!
Carl Persson Wed Jun 20 16:29:00 2012
Hey there! Great to find this group! I have been riding from Shaker to downtown at least a couple times a week since Februrary (when I'm in town) since the weather's been so amazing. Good to see this happening... Cheers!
Christopher Alvarado Tue Jun 19 14:55:00 2012
Next year, the goal needs to be 500,000 miles, at least.
Chris Bongorno Tue Jun 19 11:40:00 2012
I take Euclid out (east) during the morning rush and never get the light. I take Prospect back (west) in the afternoon rush and it usually lines up all right. Plus, there is almost always a traffic cop posted there these days. Looking forward to the Prospect bike lanes, whenever they come along...
Shelli Snyder Tue Jun 19 09:48:00 2012
@ phil...yah, the afternoon is HORRIBLE. the morning, however, isnt bad at all. but i will admit, i will use the crosswalk before heading onto prospect west, because with the backup of vehicles turning south on 9th? the poor cop is stuck in the middle of a cluster of non moving cars...so even walking is faster now! lol
Michael Lannoch Tue Jun 19 09:18:00 2012
100,000 miles!!!!!
Phil Dennison Tue Jun 19 09:16:00 2012
Given how traffic has been on Prospect and Euclid at 9th in the afternoons, I give props to anyone who can get anywhere NEAR that light, let alone go through it.
Shelli Snyder Tue Jun 19 00:46:00 2012
i saw chris in heels on the LoCa bridge about a month ago...so, it very well could have been him!
Michael Lannoch Mon Jun 18 21:45:00 2012
Does he still ride??? ;)
Christina Znidarsic Mon Jun 18 20:39:00 2012
DON'T LIE SHELLI IT WAS TOTALLY YOU (kidding)

Maybe it was Christopher Alvarado in a dress. He's a troublemaker, that one.

Shelli Snyder Mon Jun 18 10:05:00 2012
Clearing the air on Leahs comment since I ride through DT every day. Twice...it wasn't me!! (i cross 9th at Prospect, and do not blow that light!)

:)

Michael Lannoch Sun Jun 17 23:03:00 2012
I definitelly worked muscles I've never worked before stopping. The top of my knees burned. It got easier at the end when I stoppe fighting it but I can see how it takes years to really have control over that style of riding. And clipping in was fun in the no-coast mode
Christina Znidarsic Sun Jun 17 22:13:00 2012
What's it like riding a fixed-gear? I'd be terrified of having to slow down suddenly.
Michael Lannoch Sun Jun 17 21:01:00 2012
Only got in a couple miles this weekend because I spent the weekend in Philadelphia celebrating the life of a friend who recently passed by partying at FDR skatepark. I Was able to get in 10 miles riding around downtown on a fixed gear bike with a former NYC bike messenger... My first time riding fixed....Wow, amazing how different that style of riding is. Much respect to you non-coasters
Marty Cader Fri Jun 15 15:36:00 2012
Who was it?
Leah Sharkey Fri Jun 15 09:58:00 2012
I was almost just run down while crossing the street at East 9th and Euclid by one of the Cleveland Bike Challenge's higher points riders. She blew the red light at 9th completely oblivious to pedestrians in the crosswalk and ended up stranded in the middle of 9th with traffic whizzing on both sides of her. This is what drivers (and pedestrians) rightly hate about cyclists. Not to mention she could get herself killed. Please don't be be so wreckless!
Phil Dennison Fri Jun 15 07:53:00 2012
Endomondo is somehow systematically robbing me of fractions of miles. I use Cyclemeter to track export a GPX file and import into Endomondo, and it's always different. Yesterday morning Cyclemeter tracked 11.42 miles, Endomondo imported it as 10.88. This morning the difference was 8.01/7.67. I did a ride last Saturday where the difference was 25.08/24.14. What could possibly be causing this?
Jacob VanSickle Thu Jun 14 15:23:00 2012
Nice job recruiting new commuters Joe! You deserve a day off at the office in celebration.
Joe Murphy Wed Jun 13 22:30:00 2012
OMG, what fantastic weather! Wanted to just blow past the office and keep riding this morning. Have recruited a new commuter. He bought a new bike last week Tomorrow may be his first day. Stay tuned!
Brent A. Eysenbach Tue Jun 12 20:16:00 2012
Hello to the trio of Towpath commuters (southbound in afternoon). It's great to see you all out there day after day. Maybe sometime we can stop and have a sip of water together.
Kim MacDonald Tue Jun 12 20:07:00 2012
I will get us some good miles next week at GOBA, but won't be able to log them till I get home... No electricity to keep the GPS on.
Shelli Snyder Mon Jun 11 11:12:00 2012
Yesterdays SIJ was a tad hot, but a great day for pedaling lots!
Gary Sampson Sun Jun 10 17:48:00 2012
Yes, SIJ was so much fun today! Ideal conditions. Ready to go out again...
Michael Lannoch Sun Jun 10 17:19:00 2012
Amazing time today riding the "Sunday in June". Wish I could have met some other National challengers though.... Makes me kinda think their should be a casual ride on Sunday, July 1st for all of us to rack-up miles and make Cleveland a big presence early in next months tally. Heck, maybe we can even get some new riders involved. Would anybody else be up for that?
Sean Byrne Sun Jun 10 16:53:00 2012
What a very social sunday ride
Sean Byrne Sat Jun 9 15:55:00 2012

Bear Creek Coffee in Mentor > Drive through window that is bicycle friendly and serves up shots of wheat grass w/ginger and a slice of orange... nom nom nom.
Chris Bongorno Mon Jun 4 15:36:00 2012
Saw more cyclists out this morning (7:30 - 8 AM) than any morning aside from Bike to Work Day. Go Cleveland cyclists!
Bruce Andrew Jamieson Mon Jun 4 09:50:00 2012
Humbling moment: This morning I rode in on my BRAND NEW Gunnar steel road bike, its inaugural ride, and I got a flat. YEAH!
Joe Murphy Mon Jun 4 09:45:00 2012
Oh yeah, gorgeous morning in Cleveland. Got a colleague just about ready to pull the trigger on a commuter bike. Another cyclist joins the community!
Michael Lannoch Fri Jun 1 20:07:00 2012
Yeah yeah yeah.................
Christopher Alvarado Fri Jun 1 16:30:00 2012
BTW, BIKE CLEVELAND BOARD IS TEARING IT UP!!!!*

*(in June, on this first day, not counting anything before 12:01 a.m. today)

Christopher Alvarado Fri Jun 1 16:27:00 2012
In May, we were 56th. While that sounds low, keep in mind that among large communities, we were actually 4th, behind Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Columbus.
John Kovach Fri Jun 1 15:32:00 2012
How did Cleveland place Nationally for the month of May?
John Weber Fri Jun 1 08:43:00 2012
You can view your points by month using the "Period" pull down menu. Select May and you can see your points.
Casandra Vasu Fri Jun 1 01:13:00 2012
I'm thinking it's because it's now a new month. Looks like points are being reset anyway, which is also shitty.
Gary Sampson Thu May 31 22:50:00 2012
I'm also noticing that points haven't changed for a while, despite having added miles earlier. What's up with the system?
Michael Lannoch Thu May 31 14:45:00 2012
our points haven't changed all day so I'm guessing there is a snag in the system somewhere....... Although I have seen the BCP score change violently a couple times, especially when Mind Brain gets close....... weird :)
Shelli Snyder Thu May 31 12:35:00 2012
I haven't seen the BCP change...who dropped off/was added?
Jacob VanSickle Wed May 30 18:05:00 2012
Right now BCP is happily at capacity of 10. Hope Pat recovers quickly. I believe one of the top riders, Katie Schanz, is team-less. Perhaps you could recruit her.
Michael Lannoch Wed May 30 08:32:00 2012
Hey, are there any booted "Bike Cleveland Pros" that need a new home, we have a rider on the Disabled List and it seems like the BCP roster keeps changing ;)
Gary Sampson Sun May 27 22:30:00 2012
Safe cycling everyone...and healing thoughts to Pat Gilbert and MBSC from Team UC.
John Kovach Sat May 26 22:50:00 2012
One of our Mind Brain Social Club Riders had his wheel get stuck in a deep crack in the road this week, went over the handle bars and broke his collar bone... Please send Pat Gilbert some good vibes and keep him in your thoughts and prayers...
Steve Lannoch Sat May 26 13:41:00 2012
Been using the iPhone app B.iCycle. I like it and probably will not switch to Endomondo. Anyways its an honor system really. If you cheat here, yo just suck and someday
will get your just reward.
Michael Lannoch Sat May 26 11:12:00 2012
First half of the month I used the "Map my ride" site to see what the distance was and logged it manually but now I use the endomondo app. Sometimes it wigs out an skips miles but usually it works really good.
Phil Dennison Sat May 26 07:26:00 2012
I'm guessing a lot of people are using the Endomondo mobile app to log miles. I use the Cyclemeter app, then export a GPX file from there and import it here on the site. It's an extra step but I've been using Cyclemeter for a few years and find it more accurate.
Brian Asquith Sat May 26 01:11:00 2012
How are all these distances being calculated/verified? And if prizes are being given - as a prizegiver then how do they confirm the miles? Or does it not matter?
Christopher Alvarado Fri May 25 12:20:00 2012
Kristen Keyes just passed Katie Schanz on the Cleveland and National Leaderboard. OH SNAP.
Michael Lannoch Fri May 25 07:31:00 2012
It's Cleveland Critical Mass Friday!
Christopher Alvarado Thu May 24 15:49:00 2012
It's about the same as it was when you got your flats. I've been bunny-hopping the big seams at both ends of the bridge. Keep in mind that on the way into Tremont, you technically have to walk the bike across from W. 19th to 11th.

I've sent a complaint to ODOT about the conditions. If I don't see something improve in the next week or so, I'll keep trying.

Brian Asquith Thu May 24 12:54:00 2012
Chris how bad is it at the mo - got flats to front and rear last week and looking to head down there again this evening - alas will be riding a little more gingerly :)
Christopher Alvarado Thu May 24 11:11:00 2012
Glenn, that ride is awful indeed (and even worse for pedestrians). It's supposed to be done in four months. Four. Long. Months.
Sean Byrne Wed May 23 16:52:00 2012
Anyone else doing the west park ride tonight?
Michael Lannoch Wed May 23 13:29:00 2012
I had no choice.... had to go ride at lunch cause this weather is friggin amazing...
Glenn j Murray Wed May 23 09:25:00 2012
I may have to trade my 3-speed English lightweight for a mountain bike due to all of the road construction (destruction) along my commute route on Abby Ave, and soon on the Lorain Carnegie Bridge.
The irony here is that these roads are being rendered impassable by bicycles in order to install bicycle lanes. I hope ODOT can complete these faster than the West 3rd street lift bridge is taking.
Bruce Benning Wed May 23 07:53:00 2012
Rode into work today, had to battle the fog in the Heights area. Still, had a great ride in and cleared the head before work.
Jacob VanSickle Sun May 20 22:51:00 2012
Michael, currently it is on the City of Cleveland's Capital Improvement Plan beginning in 2014. Will check to see if it is still on that schedule.
Michael Lannoch Sun May 20 22:00:00 2012
I really wish we could get those certain treacherous parts of lakeshore Re-paved.... Are there any existing movements I can join?
Michael Lannoch Thu May 17 14:29:00 2012
Wish I could ride down there to partake in the festivities.... but Mentor is a little far and driving in for it seems like a backwards approach.
Joe Murphy Thu May 17 10:51:00 2012
Looking forward to coffee at Overlook on Friday AM
Totally wrong direction and downhill, but, its Fri AM and I will be on my commuter
Bruce Benning Wed May 16 11:52:00 2012
Thanks Jacob, I believe they know that here but our building just had a makeover, and management sees bikes in the building as eye-sores I guess. I’ve been riding to work for more than 25 years, and riding to this building for the last 20 years off and on and we have never lost money or customers because we had bikes in our cubes or the aisle. But with the makeover things are different. Hope they reconsider, but until then, I drive to work. After all, I see my bike like they see the new carpet and paint at work. I take pride in my bike, and I am not going to just leave it outside the building. I had a bike stolen many years ago, and shame on me if I allow that to happen again. Thanks for the input.
Christina Znidarsic Tue May 15 18:47:00 2012
Dude. I got yelled at today by a kid hangin' out his mom's minivan: "GET ON THE SIDEWALK!" I smiled and dinged my bell; I can only hope his mom set him straight. :)
Michael Lannoch Tue May 15 16:42:00 2012
Yea, ummmm, Ok, Bike Cleveland Pros, If you could stop getting giant point leaps every time we get close to you in score..... yea.... that would be greeeeeaaaaatttttttt....... kthxbai.

sincerely,
Your impressed and humbled friends at team Mind Brain.

Bruce, share this statistic with your workplace: By encouraging employees to bike commute, Minnesota company QBP saved $170,000 in health care costs over three years and $301,136 in employee productivity every year

http://blog.bikeleague.org/blog/2011/07/bicycle-friendly-business-shows-that-it-pays-to-encourage-bicycling-in-the-workplace/

Bruce Benning Tue May 15 10:19:00 2012
I am really motivated, but hit a road block with riding to work. This year, they outlawed bikes at work, so we have no place to safely store them during the day. Hope they rethink this soon otherwise I will be driving the car in every day, and not just those pesky rain days.
Phil Dennison Tue May 15 07:33:00 2012
I'm just a hair under 79 miles for May/350 for the year, and now that the weather's probably changed for good, there's going to be a lot more. Come on, Rack Pack!

Man. Biking for transport in Mayfield Heights is rugged. SOM/Mayfield intersection is downright frightening and there are NO bike racks at Golden Gate Plaza. I had to chain up to a garbage bin. There's one rack in Eastgate Plaza, outside the Target. This needs to change!

So I'm kinda wrong and kinda right. STORY OF MY LIFE.
Brian Asquith Fri May 4 13:12:00 2012
Chris...from main page indicates "All bike rides count, but a point system is in place that heavily credits daily trips giving people who use bikes for transportation an advantage (+20 points for each day you ride +1 for each mile.)"
Christopher Alvarado Fri May 4 13:09:00 2012
Ah, I am glad to be wrong! Thanks, Eric.
Eric Fassnacht Fri May 4 12:54:00 2012
Chris, I don't think that is correct. There is nothing stated in the rules that only transport miles count towards your point total. Also, my sport miles have contributed to my total points.
Michael Lannoch Fri May 4 11:05:00 2012
Uh oh, I've only marked mine as sport.......
Christopher Alvarado Fri May 4 10:10:00 2012
Remember, Clevelanders: Only miles logged as "cycling, transport" count for the Bike Challenge. So, if you take that ride through the Metroparks or around your neighborhood, make sure you do something "transporty" like communting to your favorite thinking spot (i.e.: wherever you are), carrying an important leaf from your house to the park, or just transporting your Bad Self around the block.
Chris Bongorno Thu May 3 10:41:00 2012
Michael, now we know your secret! Marty, I'm down with that plan. We've got $725 to spend after 2 days. I'm thinking that will get us about 50 linear feet of the good paint and a 6-back of Holy Moses. We've got a long way to go!

I just found this team on the site, and I just signed up. I'm happy were getting good weather again. Anyone riding on the West Side? I'm in the Berea area.
Michael Lannoch Wed May 2 09:50:00 2012
yea, its strange. the workouts from today are logged but no change in points. I'm sure they'll show up at some point.
Sean Byrne Wed May 2 09:50:00 2012
I'm on two hours as well. Logged the miles, but no points yet.
Karli VanSickle Wed May 2 09:27:00 2012
Michael - That happened to me and eventually it did show up. It didn't take 2 hours but it showed I had the points but didn't count them in the challenge.
Michael Lannoch Wed May 2 09:15:00 2012
Anybody else have problems with their points not updating? Entered in a ride almost 2 hours ago yet my total hasn't changed.
Jacob VanSickle Tue May 1 15:34:00 2012
Julia, sorry...it is because the team is already maxed out at 10 people. They limit the teams to 10 people.
Julia Schnell Tue May 1 12:38:00 2012
I keep trying to join Bike Cleveland Pros, but it gives me an error message. Oh no!
Trevor Hunt Tue May 1 10:35:00 2012

ONE MORE DAY. Get your teams together, and recruit your friends and cow-orkers!
Michael Lannoch Sun Apr 29 23:05:00 2012
I wouldn't call it trash talking as much as I would call it motivational speaking. The last time we minced words, you're team rode for 250+ points worth of mileage.... That was impressive!!!! Like crazy, nearly impossible impressive. But let's ride in solidarity into the new month. I'm hiding my car keys for the challenge....

A core piece of Bike Cleveland's vision is to foster a culture for safe biking on our neighborhood and city streets. We need to make our streets intuitive and safe for everyone. To start this process will be introducing ordinances to cities that will make our streets safer for biking (watch for those to be introduced in Cleveland soon) and implementing a share the road campaign. We also understand that to get more people comfortable biking we need to build infrastructure that will get kids and families biking. This infrastructure includes bike lanes, sharrows, and bike paths. I would love to talk with you more about Bike Cleveland's strategy and vision for cycling in our region. E-mail me at [email protected]. Ride on!
Fred Oswald Sat Apr 28 09:15:00 2012
We must educate society that bicycles are vehicles that should be driven on the same roads, by the same rules and with the same rights as other drivers. And bike lanes send exactly the wrong message.
Christopher Alvarado Fri Apr 27 12:35:00 2012
Michael Lannoch, I like the way you trash talk.
Dan Gibson Fri Apr 27 08:29:00 2012
It's been awfully cold here in Cleveland. Do trainer miles count?
Patti Flanagin Thu Apr 26 12:46:00 2012
It seems that you get more points if you complete the information that calculates MPH and calories burned.
Jacob VanSickle Wed Apr 25 16:18:00 2012
Each person on a team gets 20 points for every ride they take, plus 1 point for every mile they ride. So if you ride 5 miles you get 25 points. It is built to give priority over commuting, but still gives points for those biking for recreation (which are usually longer trips).
Michael Lannoch Wed Apr 25 14:25:00 2012
I guess I'm still trying to figure out how this whole point-ranking system works. seeing as how one of the teams jumped over 250 points in under 12 hours..... not sure how that works. Would love to know though before may 1st.
Michael Lannoch Wed Apr 25 12:13:00 2012
Ha! While you're at it, look into getting excuses to be a workout as well. :D
Christopher Alvarado Wed Apr 25 09:06:00 2012
I'm still trying to figure out how to count "meetings" as a workout! As soon as we do, though, Bike Cleveland Board will KNOCK YOU OUT.
Michael Lannoch Tue Apr 24 19:53:00 2012
Hey Team "Bike Cleveland Board". Team "Mind Brain" just burned you like the 9 Pabst Blue Ribbons I burned after my ride tonight. STEP UP if you want your podium spot back. Calling you out now (in a friendly M.B. social club) way when this thing goes official May 1st.
Patti Flanagin Mon Apr 16 22:00:00 2012
Having this site really motivates me to ride and log more miles. It's great!
David schalmo Sun Apr 8 12:13:00 2012
Bike messenger=ringer. I'm ok with that though.
Christopher Alvarado Fri Apr 6 14:57:00 2012
Team Bike Cleveland Board will burn all of you just like I burned 9 burgers this past month, I kid you not. STEP UP.
Jacob VanSickle Thu Apr 5 22:04:00 2012
Tell Everyone!

91 people have registered for the Cleveland Bike Challenge, and logged over 3,500 miles in the pre-challenge warm-up. WHOAAA!!

Remember that this is a national challenge, which means we are competing against cities across the US. Lets show the rest of the country how much we ride in Cleveland. Tell your friends, co-workers, and friends to sign-up and start warming-up for the Challenge, which begins May 1st.

If you haven't done so already be sure to put together a team. You can learn how by watching the videos at BikeCleveland.org/Challenge. Lets have over 115 people registered by the end of the weekend!

Jacob VanSickle Sun Mar 25 23:10:00 2012
Great to see people are logging in to warm-up before the Bike Cleveland Challenge starts on May 1st. Invite your friends, family, and coworkers. You can invite people through Facebook, or by inviting them to join your team (teams of 10 are encouraged). The goal is to log over 100,000 miles between May and the end of August. That is the equivalent of riding around the earth 4 times!
Shelli Snyder Wed Dec 31 18:00:00 1969
@ Darin...um. That's next Wednesday. ;)
Dennis Litto Wed Dec 31 18:00:00 1969
Anyone else having problems uploading with their Garmin? I have the 500 and can upload to my personal page but it will not let me u[pload to the challenge. My plugin is up to date.
Jacob VanSickle Wed Dec 31 18:00:00 1969
You think we can get to 250,000 miles by the end of the challenge on August 31st?
Chris Bongorno Wed Dec 31 18:00:00 1969
No limit to team sizes this year?
