John- REALLY depends on the tire...I've had some fast, light, fun road tires last a very short time. Much less than 2000 miles, and flats-a-plenty. My current set of tires have been on since middle May, and have over 4000 commuting and gravel miles with plenty of life left. You have to find a balance of what qualities you want.
Had my first flat tire today at work. Small hole in the tube tire is worn and had some glass or cinders stuck in it. I have never replaced the tube since I bought the bike in 1983 but this tire only lasted 2000 miles (16 months) time wise that is way fast for me but mile wise I don't know. It was my third back tire second front tire still looks good. How long should a bike tire last?
If you live in North America & plan to ride through this winter check out the Winter Warrior's Challenge. This chalenge is for snow and ice riders. If you use (or realy should use) studded snow tires on your bike any time during the challenge you are in. We had 18 riders last year. Average distance was 880.6 miles in Nov, Dec, Jan, & Feb.

Stephen, I have a critter story! A couple weeks ago I was charged by a loose bull! He was in the middle of the road and, like an idiot, I tried to slowly ride by. Lucky for me, he lost his footing on the asphalt, and I got away!
Larry, I agree wholeheartedly. Don't know if it's an error on their part, or something more sinister. Anyway, those who did the miles honestly can hold their heads up high.
I think unfortunately there are some riders that do not know how to log their miles. At least it is hard for me to understand why they would ride exactly 60 miles, for example, 5 times the same day!

Riding to and from work this year, I've had several notable encounters. This spring, I was regularly attacked by geese, Usually it was just a hissing contest... (I'm getting pretty good at it). but I did have one of them fly up and land on my backpack with her feet wrapped around it digging into my sides while she pecked at my helmit... (ALWAYS wear your helmit). Earlier this summer the gnats were viscious. I hit one particularily dense swarm that nearly knocked me off my bike. (I was picking gnats out of my teeth for days.....) Couple weeks ago I had a drag race with a Racoon (I won, but not by much....). Last week I stirred up a couple young deer (Nice, new rack on the Buck) and the very next day had a Kamikazie dragon fly dive into my face and try to blind me. (Those things are HUGE...) Riding closer to sunrise and sunset now does make the commute more interesting, at times.

Shorter days make it hard to get in good ride after working a full day.
On longer rides I will start and stop mine every stop. Otherwise my battery runs dead faster.
I have the endomondo app, too. I just turn it on every time I get on the bike and off when finished. Some days, I have various errands around town; hence, short distances. Other times, I leave the app on, while finishing business, but this tends to spend the battery.
I have the endomondo app on my phone and it auto logs it so mine are different each time
I was wondering if anyone ever checks to see that people are entering there miles in the right way. I happen to notice that some people have the exact same miles entered 5 to 6 times for the same day.
As of late, I have a lot of mountain biking miles recorded. For my recording, this means miles put on my Moonlander, but not truly "mountain biking." I am trying to track miles on my 29er vs my Moonlander, and am using the type of ride as the key. I simply can't find a way to add a general category allowing me to differentiate between bikes.
I won the gold level prize of a membership to League of American bicyclists. To redeem it, the email said to reply. I have several times and no one has gotten back to me.
@Greg - Hwy21 south towards Victor from Belle Plain. Still looking back, very fortunate to come through it as well as I did. My normal route has been to the east of where I live commuting to work in C.R. I will go west sometimes for a longer route to get some extended training in. Wasn't my day to go to the west :)

Saturday morning's ride ended abruptly being struck by a car. Fortunate to live and tell about it. Reminder to always wear your helmet and ride right. That still does not prevent distracted drivers not seeing you so ride safe. I had just checked my mirror and made sure I was over on the white line. Next thing I was in the air. Was looking forward to the granGable...maybe next year. My bike is toast but replaceable.

For those that did ride RAGBRAI should the miles be for sport or transportation? I had transportation but changed them to sport still seems like the riding was to get me to the next party so transportation.
Rode the whole thing. Monday was long and hot but that climb out of the park about did me in lol.

biking to work is great....but consider biking to church too. I just came back from my bike to church ride.......it can be done as easily as biking to work.....

Hauled 3 yr old daughter in the Burley yesterday on Cedar Valley Lakes trail in Cedar Fall INTO the 20 mph wind for 6+ miles! Not only did I survive, I can walk today! Great to know I'm not too out of shape! :)

I was somewhat disappointed in Atlantic's turnout, but it was a good ride anyway. We even had one ride on the back of tandem that was one of them we honor. It was the first time in 6 years that he'd been on an upright bike!

Ride of Silence in Cedar Rapids had a good turn out. I hope we had some members of NBC support their communities in the effort yesterday to pay respect/honor to those injured/killed when cycling, and to advocate for safety and awareness between cyclists and vehicles.

I have the endomondo app, too. I just turn it on every time I get on the bike and off when finished. Some days, I have various errands around town; hence, short distances. Other times, I leave the app on, while finishing business, but this tends to spend the battery.

As of late, I have a lot of mountain biking miles recorded. For my recording, this means miles put on my Moonlander, but not truly "mountain biking." I am trying to track miles on my 29er vs my Moonlander, and am using the type of ride as the key. I simply can't find a way to add a general category allowing me to differentiate between bikes.

My normal route has been to the east of where I live commuting to work in C.R. I will go west sometimes for a longer route to get some extended training in. Wasn't my day to go to the west :)

Excellent Dream Team ride yesterday from Des Moines to Altoona - 26 miles, including a stop at DQ.
Rode with Des Moines Dream Team from downtown Des Moines to Monroe. A good hilly road trip. Fortunately the rain held off until the ride was completed. A great ride.
Crazy ride home yesterday in the Quad Cities! Leaning into strong south wind to stay up right on bike. Made it to shelter prior to storms blowing through.
Hauled 3 yr old daughter in the Burley yesterday on Cedar Valley Lakes trail in Cedar Fall INTO the 20 mph wind for 6+ miles! Not only did I survive, I can walk today! Great to know I'm not too out of shape! :)

I was somewhat disappointed in Atlantic's turnout, but it was a good ride anyway. We even had one ride on the back of tandem that was one of them we honor. It was the first time in 6 years that he'd been on an upright bike!
Ride of Silence in Cedar Rapids had a good turn out. I hope we had some members of NBC support their communities in the effort yesterday to pay respect/honor to those injured/killed when cycling, and to advocate for safety and awareness between cyclists and vehicles.

Hi Maryann - I agree with Paul. I would not ride without them. I ride an aggressive four row stud in the front to get out of icy ruts and a two row stud on the back to get up hills. If your area is fairly flat, no rear studs may be needed. The front tire is the most critical. Here is a page that is most helpful for selecting what will fit your bike and the pro’s and con’s of the major different styles.

Can anyone tell me if studded tires really do make a difference in this kind of weather (such as we just got in Central Iowa from Blizzard Draco)? I've only been cycling for a couple of years, and I had no trouble biking during last year's mild winter. I'm not sure of the best course of action for continuing in a snowy/icy winter

Zach: Just go to the main Endomondo page and click on the 'Challenges' tab at the top menu bar- then you can search 'Des Moines' and it should pop right up. It's not too late at all. All of your miles from the start time of the challenge will automatically transfer. Spread the word! I only started this because I saw Omaha and Lincoln had a friendly rivalry going with their winter challenges, and I wondered if we could get the same sort of enthusiasm generated here.

I was just reading some of these old posts. Really can't underrstand why anyone would think RAGBRAI miles shouldn't be added on Endomondo. Sounds like someone got passed on the LEADERBOARD. Miles are miles regardless of where they are ridden. That was the instruction at the start of the season and that's never been changed. Everyone who is out there riding and enjoying the great outdoors should be proud! I sure am and love being part of the biking community!
As a competitive cyclist and bike mechanic/dealer I do not like RAGBRAI (moved here from Nebraska/South Dakota and just see it as a big party that dirties the cities it touches), but I do believe that the miles should count. Having people come in to the store with RAGBRAI a goal of theirs, whether it be a day or the entire week, is a true test of the sport of cycling. This website isn't about who can log the most mileage, it is about the cycling community coming together from across Iowa, as well as the Nation to support and tell about their rides. If you want to measure yourself against other riders on here based on mileage alone as a competition then you do not know what it takes to be in a competition.
Some riders on here have all the time in the world to be out there and it shows, but if you can put in 10 miles a week then great! Who are any of us to say that a 500 mile joy ride isn't considered riding? If you want to look on here to compare yourself to everyone in Iowa on your work ethic then you truly have not seen the value of this sport.
This morning at 6am was perfect weather to ride to work. This afternoon riding back was not.....HOT AND HUMID!!!!

All I can say is that I am retired and the Iowa Goes by Bicycle is a GREAT incentive for people like me to push themselves to stay in shape. Miles are miles no matter how you get them. Just hit 59 last Wednesday on RAGBRAI but bailed because of the heat and wind. Still taking on air and going forward!!
@Chris ,Brother ALL your miles count....Keep on riding and record every mile you actually pedal.This is not a political event ,Its just a show of Bikers who belong on the road too.Besides its not legal to ride down ANY interstate,even if you are Lance LOL.
I work 35 miles away from where i live. I will not ride my bike down the interstate to get to work. I counted Ragbrai cause my miles were all in training for it. So technically to some of you none of my miles should count since i don't ride to work. Get a clue

I don't do RAGBRAI, but absolutely agree the miles should count. In my mind, Endomondo isn't a competition, but an opportunity to record overall cycling miles to promote awareness and encourage personal consistency over time. If someone surpasses my month's worth of commuter miles in a single day of RAGBRAI, that's great! It represents folks getting off thier butts and doing something other than sitting in cars and in front of TVs.

RAGBRAI miles should absolutely count, especially if sport cycling miles count. How many of these miles added were because of training for RAGBRAI? It would however be interesting to see stats for transportation miles only.
Why not? People are on their bikes and putting in miles. And what this competition is about is raising awareness of people on bikes. Far as I'm concerned RAGRBRAI does exactly that.
RAGBRAI miles really shouldn't count for the competition. That is simply padding miles assuming you have the time to do it.

@ maureen I dont know if there is one along the river on our side .Im from DBQ and I know there are shorter trails close to the river but not as long as the one over by Thomson.Heritage trial from DBQ to Dyersville is nice although its not paved.
Did the Great River Trail from Port Byron to almost Thomson in Illinios. Great day for it. Does Iowa have a trail like that on our side ot the Mississippi?

I was looking at May. I logged my miles at roughly 8pm last night, and they hadn't updated by 11pm. Looked again this morning and everything had updated. All is good.
@Zach - They update just fine. This issue you are likely having is that the leaderboard view is on a month by month basis. It switched months, so... You either need to look at the month you're interested in or select "Entire Period".

No Leon, they should have no issue going around you in the other lane. And honestly, truly serious riders won't be on the trail as it's not safe to maintain the speeds on a multi use trail nor elevation grades significant enough to be challenging. My pace on the trail may be quicker than most but I have no issue slowing to almost a complete stop to wait for a safe time to pass someone. In my mind, this is a requirement in using the trail as part of a community. When I want to really crank out some miles, the county roads are a much better option all the way around.
My biggest issue is the 'serious' riders on the trails. The road bikes that are in a hurry; it is very rare for me to hear one of them say 'on your left' as they pass me and many seem unwilling to actually switch lanes to go around me. Is there a reason courtesy doesn't apply to them? Other than that, I love the bike trails around Cedar Rapids and use them frequently.
A barn swallow swooped into my front spokes on the way to work this morning, got spun around for about 2 revolutions, then catapulted into the air...and flew away.
Yea, I came around a dead coner with three very large people all walking side by side. and another two riders oncoming. I know what you mean about the families. I love to see little kiddos out there but some of them should really just be on the sidewalk in front of their house with their parents walking along side them
Greg- I totally agree. I got frustrated and gave up. Too many people who don't understand what "passing on the left" means, not to mention whole families with lots of little kids in tow. Too bad- it was the first time I had time available to ride AND it was nice.
Sunday couldn't have been a more beautiful day for a bike ride. Perfect temps, not too much wind. Sunny. LOTS of people on the trail though and a fair share of those that don't understand trail etiquette.

I just started using Endomondo this week, used to log miles on www.greenlightride.com. Wow the difference. Endomondo doesn't have as much detail or a very good user interface, but the mapping and gps is awsome.
