Only a mile thru 6 inches of sticky snow today really wore me out.
Douglas Bowman Tue Oct 21 12:42:00 2014
LOOK its time to pull out the winter gear - snow in the forecast locally!!!
Douglas Bowman Thu Oct 9 16:15:00 2014
By the way Mark from your earlier coment about year-round challenge you know Blaine and I are up for THAT!
Doug Waltz Wed Oct 8 08:26:00 2014
MArk, I have a single speed, fully fendered Huffy and went with cruiser tires that have this flat oval tread that while intended for sand riding work great in snow. I pedal year round in Michigan to work and back.

To all the fair weather riders Note: Neither wind, rain, sleet, nor snow shall prevent this male from delivering!
Andrew Thompson Sat Jun 28 14:43:00 2014
@Kelly Thomas - Crashing sucks! NIce you were not hurt seriously. Good on you for cranking it out.
Jack Salmon Thu Jun 26 01:34:00 2014
Was only able to do the minimum the last 2 days because of a worn chain and sprocket. We now have new and are back up and riding. Thanks Mark.
Brandon B Tue Jun 24 01:19:00 2014
Wow! Today was VERY hot and humid for me. I just fiinished a 30 minute high intensity ride. I had an entire water bottle and feel fatigued and very dehydrated. Be careful out there!
Kelly Thomas Sun Jun 22 17:02:00 2014
Left out at 5:40 this morning in an attempt to ride my first century. It was all beautiful, tons of wildlife and nature. I was in my glory. Had loaded up some Clif bars for energy and two water bottles full of cold water. About 30 miles in I reached for my water bottle sitting in my bag only to realize it was gone (had been using my other bottle up until then)!! Must have flew out when I hit a bump and didn't realize it. :( So then I had to depend on just one water bottle and hope there were lots of drinking fountains on the trails. There was ONE. At mile 42. I filled up and turned to head back the other direction when mile 45 hit.. I didn't see the sharp turn on the gravel road until it was to late.. Going a good 16 mph, I took a massive spill. From my thigh to my ankle was all bloody and torn up. My shoulder heavily bruised and scraped. My other ankle has a large blue bruised lump on it. Needless to say it was a very painful ride back home and only managed 88.98 miles. I was in pain, ran out of water and was dying from the heat.
What a ride!
Kelly Thomas Sun Jun 22 03:07:00 2014
@ Alaina - Haha!! I haven't done that with donuts, but other things and everybody is so amazed. Lol. Where there's a will, there's a way!
Jack Marks Sun Jun 22 02:46:00 2014
No riding for me today put my bike in shop tomorrow,I am doing the Hero Rush in Oxford maybe I will get some miles in Sunday.
Alaina Furr Sun Jun 22 01:05:00 2014
So my coworkers were saying that it would not be able to bike to work this morning, because it was my week to buy the Friday AM doughnuts. A couple even offered to pick them up from the bakery, so could still ride. I told them its not a problem. I have a bike rack and bungee cords. All day yesterday, the running joke was that they were going to be subject to eating squished doughnuts mixed with gravel (from box falling off bike). This morning I rode up to the door promptly at 8AM, with a full bakery box strapped to my bike rack. Not a single squished doughnut in sight. Needless to say, my coworkers were stunned. Now the joke is that I missed my calling of working for Jimmy Johns :). It was all in good fun, and I think I may have opened some of their eyes a bit to the possibility of bicycles as practical transportation.
Timothy M Walsh Sat Jun 21 21:07:00 2014
Off to a conference tomorrow, no bike for a week, unless I can find one to borrow down there
makayla A helmer Sat Jun 21 02:37:00 2014
Way to ride everybody! Keep up the good work and keep riding. Also watch out for papas group we are out to win!
Brandon B Fri Jun 20 01:30:00 2014
Ok, thanks. I know about 5 guys burger, but I absolutely hate those really bumpy gravel trails. The burgers won't help with my diet anyway lol...There is a great coffee shop in downtown Rochester where the Starbucks used to be.
Jack Marks Thu Jun 19 23:15:00 2014
Brandon that part of trail is still bumpy it gets better the farther south west you get and there is a five guys burger a few miles down. Donald I don't have a smart phone will try the manual way but im not good with computers.
Donald Millikin Thu Jun 19 20:39:00 2014
Jack, the easiest way if you have a smart phone (Iphone, Android) is to down load the free app and use that to track your ride, after you stop it at he end of your ride everything is automatically logged including a map of your route. If you don't have a smart phone and log in your miles manually, click on leaderboard (at top of page) this leaderboard will take you to the leaderboard showing your rank for the month, click on your name and it will take you to your page, now click on the see profile on endomondo link on the right side of page and this will take you to another page showing your overall summary, now click on the workouts link above your name, this will take you to a calendar of your workouts, on the right below the calendar is an edit link, click on the edit and an edit workout box will pop up, you can enter riding time and add comments describing the ride then click save and there you have it.
Brandon B Thu Jun 19 18:27:00 2014
Hey jack, I live in the relative location that you are in. How are the trail conditions on the Paint Creek Trail and the beginning part of the Clinton River trail that starts off from the Onyx Arena? I'm not sure if it is smooth enough on those to bring my Specialized Sirrus Elite. The beginning of the Clinton River Trail that backs up to the Orchard Trail was really bumpy last year...
Jack Marks Thu Jun 19 17:45:00 2014
Donald, Kathe I don't know how to log anything but miles rode would like to know how to log time and ware I ride. Today I rode the Polly Ann trail from the Lake Orion, Oxford border to Dryden and back home. It was 34.71 miles took me 2 hours 41 min. I ride almost all trails don't like the road I have Polly Ann, Paint creek, Macomb Clinton that I ride. Will be doing the Michigander in July.
Donald Millikin Thu Jun 19 14:25:00 2014
Thanks for the feedback Kathe I too wish that others would include full info I like to check out where others are riding
Kathe Blue Hetter Wed Jun 18 02:34:00 2014
Donald, I am sure it is okay. You are actually a person who records their actual miles and duration and lets everyone see it which is not true for a lot of others. Enjoy riding through Wisconsin.
Donald Millikin Tue Jun 17 21:13:00 2014
Will be touring by bicycle later this summer, wondering if it's OK to log miles for the challenge ridden in alien lands, like Wisconsin or Canada.
David Taylor Sun Jun 15 12:40:00 2014
Glad your OK Tim.. Very glad you got the plate # too
Timothy M Walsh Sun Jun 15 10:51:00 2014
Be careful riding in Saint Joseph, Michigan along Lakeshore Drive, aka Red Arrow Highway. Had 3 teens in a car trying to hit me yesterday, passenger was leaning out the window with his arm out stretched yelling at me. Not a big deal normally but in this case they pulled into a parking lot and when I rode past pulled out and tried it a second time. The Saint Joseph police wouldn't take a report over the phone, I did get the license plate number.
Korey Christopher Stewart Thu Jun 12 13:56:00 2014
Took a week of work just so i can put some miles on ME-BIKE.
Kelly Thomas Wed Jun 11 13:55:00 2014
@ Andrew - I was soaked by the time I got home from work.
Andrew Colombo-Dougovito Wed Jun 11 02:16:00 2014
What a wet day for a commute today... was soaked to the bone by the time i got to work.

Douglas Bowman Sat Jun 7 14:29:00 2014
Ouch, where was this at Tim?
Timothy M Walsh Wed Jun 4 23:28:00 2014
Ran into a bike/SUV accident on my ride tonight, I can definitely state the law of gross tonnage still applies. Didn't see the rider, but the ambulance was just leaving without lights or sirens, which probably isn't a good thing, but could be.
Cassandra H Mon Jun 2 21:34:00 2014
@Kelly, thanks :-) I skipped yesterday due to lightning as I'm not that crazy. I'm back at it today! still a bit sore.
Kelly Thomas Mon Jun 2 02:47:00 2014
@ Kathe - Thanks!
Kathe Blue Hetter Sun Jun 1 23:41:00 2014
@ Kelly. Critical Mass meets up at the corner of Warren and Trumbull. You take the Trumbull exit off of I-94. This corner is a green baseball lot and there is free street parking especially on Trumbull right by the Woodbridge Pub. The ride usually goes for two hours and sometimes part of the group will continue to ride after getting back to the corner of Warren and Trumbull. Definitely bring a light. Here is the Facebook link, you just have to ask for an invite. https://www.facebook.com/groups/71297671024/
Kelly Thomas Sun Jun 1 13:53:00 2014
@ Kathe - Definitely interested. I'm unfamiliar with that area though. I would have to drive to get there. Where is there parking? How long does everyone ride for?
Kathe Blue Hetter Sun Jun 1 03:41:00 2014
Awesome Detroit Critical Mass ride tonight!! It poured the whole time, and we still had over 300 people biking! At the end we were all very wet but got rewarded with a rainbow. Come join the CM sometime here in Detroit, the last Friday of every month. Starts at the corner of Warren and Trumbull, start massing up at 6:30pm, takes off around 7:00pm
Kelly Thomas Sat May 31 17:14:00 2014
@ Cassandra - Glad you're ok though!
Cassandra H Sat May 31 16:48:00 2014
I was out for a few days due to rain and injury... had my first real accident. Well, it wasn't bad but I was a bit bruised and sore and needed to get a few days rest and get the bike checked out for any damages.
Kelly Thomas Sat May 31 14:53:00 2014
Michigan just keeps dropping in the ranks.. Now we are down to 28th place.. Let's get back up there in June!! Pedal people, pedal!! :)
Kelly Thomas Fri May 30 16:30:00 2014
@ Brian - I recently got a pair of fenders for my bike. I no longer have a mud stripe up my back when I ride in the rain. :) I ride to and from work, rain or shine, but now it's much more pleasant in the rain knowing I'm not going to be completely dirty by the time I get to work.
Brian Peterman Fri May 30 15:45:00 2014
I'm thinking of getting fenders, so wet roads and rain are less of a deterrent.
Timothy M Walsh Fri May 30 02:44:00 2014
Weather has kept me from riding as well Roger, although I did get a decent ride in today as well
Roger J Behnke Thu May 29 22:57:00 2014
Hugo the weather is just the opposite here in the Kalamazoo area. The rain kept me off of my bike yesterday, but I just put in a nice 18 mile ride today
Doug Waltz Tue May 27 18:12:00 2014
Working a short holiday shift and will be biking home in this nasty weather. The Weather Channel promised the rain would be gone by 7.
hugo Hinojos Tue May 27 14:09:00 2014
Yesterday was a beautiful weather to bike out in west Michigan! Today, not so much!
Scott Hollingshead Sat May 24 21:41:00 2014
So I had my first breakdown of the season today. Rode about six miles then found a new pot hole as I was watching a mini van about to merge onto the road I was on. After the repair was complete, I went back out an put on some more miles. The weather has put a real damper on my riding this week, but I hope to make up for lost time as I am on vacation next week.
Gregg Smith Sat May 24 19:24:00 2014
Hey Michigan riders ... especially those in Southeastern Michigan ... I have a great way for you to get in some miles and support a good cause. On June 15th there is an event called Tour de Cure, which is a fundraising event for diabetes. It starts and ends in Brighton. Sign up, get your family and friends to donate, and rack up some miles. They have multiple distances so there is something for everyone. If you don't want to ride but want to help the cause, you could make a donation on behalf of a rider. ; )
Kathe Blue Hetter Wed May 21 02:53:00 2014
Russell, glad to have you join in the challenge. Bet that you will be back up in the top 10% this year too.
Russell Clubine Tue May 20 02:55:00 2014
First ride of the year for me today. Beautiful day in the 80's with low humidity. Had my heart cath last Wednesday and good news was only found two minor blockages, one 30% and another at 40%. Will have to start taking Lipitor to keep it from getting any worse. Had to lay low a couple days and had company this weekend, so, didn't ride until today. Now I have alot of rides to make up to get back into the thick of things. I finished in the top 10% last year and would like to do same this year. Also weigh more than I ever have at 204 and need to lose 20 lbs, so, biking will help. Let's go Michigan!
Kathe Blue Hetter Sun May 18 23:24:00 2014
Great ride today with Tour de Troit Cycle into Spring ride! Big crowds, excellent police escort and to cap it off, Slows bbq for lunch!
League of Michigan Bicyclists Fri May 16 16:24:00 2014
We picked up a spot in the national standings for Michigan! We slipped to 26 yesterday, and back to 25 today. Let's get back to 24!
Kelly Thomas Fri May 16 13:00:00 2014
What an absolute beautiful morning! Made for a fantastic ride into work today.
Kathe Blue Hetter Tue May 13 20:24:00 2014
Heading out for a ride. Trying to keep it real by making sure I record all my miles on my Garmin and then putting it up with my routes on Endomondo for accurate mileage and points.
Randi Mathieu Tue May 13 18:48:00 2014
I'm back from vacation - now it's time to get pedaling! If you live out towards Ira Twp stop by the library on your bike and get a free gift this week only!
Kelly Thomas Tue May 13 16:13:00 2014
It sure was a brrr out there this morning on the way to work! Took me an extra 15 minutes to get to work in the headwinds. Should be great heading home though!

Good Morning Riders! How are we doing this chilly morning?

@Dawn If the person has two profiles, they need to delete the one they don't want anymore, and they will be subsequently removed from the team. Kathe Blue Hetter Tue May 13 02:06:00 2014
Definitely was windy out today.
Adam Hiltunen Tue May 13 01:33:00 2014
Horrible weather today, just did my 1 mile to get my 20 points for the day. Where is the warmer weather like we had a week ago?
Kelly Thomas Tue May 13 00:37:00 2014
That weather earlier today made for one heck of a ride. I even got pelted in the face with hail at one point in time trying to pedal into the 22mph winds going uphill on an overpass and these cars had no respect for how hard that was and were whizzing by me within a foot of my handle bars! What a day.

Our teams from the 2012 challenge are still intact, and accruing points this year. But those teams aren't in the 2013 challenge. So contrary to my previous thoughts, the old teams can still compete against each other, but they won't show up on the 2013 leaderboard. If you want to join a 2013 challenge team, join Barry's unlimited membership AEP Team, which is the only team in AEP for the 2013 challenge thus far.

Kathe - of course you bike tomorrow. Done, done and done doesn't mean that you are done... Fact is...us Michiganders ought to challenge the rest of the bunch to pedal in the salted slush. LMB would never sanction such dangerous madness. I picked up an Archer-Sturmey AW 3 spd rear wheel for $5 this week, and am starting to believe that with my yellow Farm & Fleet reflective vest, blazing flashing tail light (thanks Doug), and my recently ACC-honed wits - that I might continue to commute thru our relatively mild SW MI winter. Even found studded bike tires on a Finn website. My fully fendered 1982 Fuji Espree fixie is just begging for some more modifications.

Blaine is currently leading in October. Did everybody fill out the feedback survey? Let's recommend that we run the challenge continuously. Around the calender....

Only 4 days left in the NBC for this year. I've got travel days on Friday and Saturday but I then get to finish off the Challenge on the first two days of Cycle North Carolina. If you like doing supported group tours you owe it to yourself to try this one. West to east from the mountains to the coast in 7 days. @ Timothy - I've given blood a handful of times and always drink lots of water prior to giving. Never had this issue, but it was completely my fault this time. I live on the 8th floor of my building and the elevator was taking too long after I got home and attempted to take the stairs. BIG mistake. I'll probably try to take my bike out tonight after work for a short ride, but biking round trip to work 27 miles.. I'm going to hold off until I'm sure I'm good to go.

@kelly -they told me not to give blood any more cause I pass out and if they aren't done collecting they can't use the blood. Discovered in my case it was due to not hydrating before giving the blood, the more hydrated you are the less likely your body is to go into shock and pass out I'm told

Yikes, almost got hit by one of those big lawn mowers.... The ones that turn on point ( I think that's what they're called)... I was riding along, in a nearby fancy subdivision, about 2ft. From the curb, going by some guys yard, near some of his shrubs/ trees, and he came right on out toward the street, oblivious of what was in front of him... Luckily I wasn't closer to the curb, or I'd have gotten hit. I swerved, we both slowed down and just stared at each other.... Sigh...

Holy wow! The wonders cycling can do for you without you even realizing it!
I just took up cycling in April of this year because of too many chronic running injuries I was having. I still run, just more like once a month rather than 4-5 days a week and my mileage for those runs are WAY down. However, I still love racing so I sign up for a 5k here and there because you don't really need to train for those.
**
Any who... I ran a race this morning that I ran last year this time.. My time last year was 32:18.. This year with no training, I ran it in 26:19!! Holy moly man! Shaved 6 minutes off my time! Even when I was training to run races, my average pace usually never got better than 9:30-10:00 depending on the length. I just did a 8:29/mile! Cycling every single day did that! Unbelievable.

@Kelly - It could be that they don't have a smart phone with the app and record their rides once a day, counting a to work and from work as separate rides and therefore appearing to be duplicating rides. It may have taken them all summer to get to a point where they feel comfortable riding to work, working all day and then riding home again.
Timothy M Walsh Sat Sep 14 22:52:00 2013

As far as the "random" person going into the top 10 for the month, a consistent ride usually means their commute to work each day is recorded. At least they are posting their rides with mileage for all to see. There are riders who will not show their profile/calendar to anyone and are in the top ten. As a person of science in order to be legit you must show your data to others for verification. But then again this is all for are own personal commitment so I have no problem with the "random" person.
Timothy M Walsh Sat Sep 14 01:41:00 2013
@Doug Stopped by, looks like you were having some work done, so I'll try again tomorrow. Meanwhile put a mile on my wife's bike for the team points.
Kelly Thomas Fri Sep 13 23:32:00 2013
@ Jim - Hopefully they get things figured out. You guys worked hard to get to the top 3, would be nice to get the prize!

@ Kathe - I get what you're saying, but usually people commute back and forth at different times of the day. Not at the same time. That is a duplicate workout. (And if I recall, in the first month, you commented on someone else's workout with the same issue) I commute to and from work as well. Unless this person just marks the same time of day and just records solely the miles, but the fact that this person got angry and gave me an attitude in regards to me mentioning that usually is a sign that they got caught doing something wrong. But hey.. If people want to cheat, they're only cheating themselves. I entered this challenge for the fun of it and a way to "mingle" with others who share the love of riding. I could care less if I'm in first or last place, but I think people should be honest about their miles. There is no money at stake so why cheat?

Sooo... I noticed that a random person jumped up to the top 10 that hasn't been there the whole challenge... I clicked into this person's profile and noticed all the rides were duplicates and even a couple days ago was quadruplicated. I mentioned something on one of this person's workouts and received no response. If it was done in error, one would think they'd appreciate the comment and correct the problem. Hmmm...

Timothy M Walsh Fri Sep 13 00:23:00 2013
It was pointed out to me that my luck might have changed, I had a flat yesterday on my ride, and stopped near the Benton Harbor library to fix it. Just as I finished putting the tire back on a lady came out of the library, and it started to rain. She was kind enough not only to offer me a ride home, she also fed me and didn't complain about my stink. Yeah, she was my wife of 30+ years, the tire picked the perfect spot to go flat.
Timothy M Walsh Fri Sep 13 00:18:00 2013
@Kelly - That's a good thing, I make a point of stopping and asking people walking their bikes if they need help. One guy I came upon had destroyed his derailer, and was as red as a tomato, I couldn't fix his derailer but I could share my water which he appreciated.

@ Korey - Glad you can ride again!

I did my good deed today. Felt really good. On my way home I saw a boy about 14 or 15 years old walking his bike. He got a flat and said he would just walk home (which apparently was another several miles), I hopped off my bike, patched his tube and he was so grateful. He had just gotten out of football practice and was headed home. Perfect timing too because about 15 minutes after I got home the weather turned nasty. Hope he made it home safe!

Tubes are big rubber bands. Cut in sections to make lots of little rubber bands. Use tubes as glue clamps for wood projects; bungee cord; resistance training ( like surgical tube). Cut one open and use as base for duct tape wallet; wrap around tools so they will not grind through the bag...

I use a few patches myself before tossing out a tube. I have two spare tubes that each have a patch. Seems a waste to just toss them and I haven't found anything to reuse them for.

I usually patch 2 or 3 tmes before tossing a tube out. But I switched to shielded tires a few years ago. Only one flat in +4k miles. Curently on second set of tires. Love.

@ Douglas - Brrr! I would have been a Popsicle wearing that on my way to work this morning! Haha! I wore pants, long sleeved top with my light weight running jacket over it and my winter cycling gloves (can't stand frozen fingers!)

Kelly Thomas Fri Sep 6 23:18:00 2013
@ Andrew - Yup. This morning I broke out some of my winter gear.

@ Timothy - Usually 3 patches before I toss the tube. I've only had to replace 1 tire this season because I kept getting a flat over and over again. I think where a piece of glass had gotten stuck left a hole just big enough to pinch my tube.

Timothy M Walsh Fri Sep 6 21:13:00 2013
Actually tires have other criteria, no tread left is one, or the tire is to thin to protect the tube resulting in an increase rate of flats
Timothy M Walsh Fri Sep 6 21:10:00 2013
I've replaced 3 tires this year and 4 tubes, usually get a handful of patches before I replace. As long as the tube holds air after a patch I keep it. Replace the tires when the holes are big enough for the tube to start poking out
Timothy M Walsh Fri Sep 6 21:09:00 2013

Geez Timothy! You're starting to sound like me! Ha! So far this summer (on my bike) I've been attacked by two geese, bit by a dog, crashed my bike, had some one crash their bike into mine.. In the past 3 weeks alone I've had 8 flats including one yesterday. Then on my way home yesterday my front fender started falling off and the part of my computer that connects to the fork of my bike got too close to the spokes and got caught in it shattering the magnet part to bits!
Maybe we need to start driving or something? Lol!!

It was actually therapy with a very ill daughter during this month, finally a diagnosis of Crohn's, hospitalization, and two surgeries all during the month. Hoping September will be better for her and biking.

Almost got taken out twice on my ride today. As much as I'd like to blame the people in the car, I have to admit I could have been exercising a little more defensive riding and not assumed the driver actually registered me when they looked me in the eye. They saw me, but that doesn't mean it registered when they are in auto-pilot heading home from a long day

Be careful out there

Awesome Timothy!

Today's commute home from work was absolute horror for me. You see, I have a phobia of bugs and don't know why, maybe the humidity and the rain, but there were swarms of thousands of flying insects on my way home today. I almost had a full blown panic attack. It was like it was raining on me! I jumped immediately in the shower when I got home. Bugs were falling off of me and out of my clothes into the tub. I had them crawling all over my floor and counters too! I'm almost afraid to bike to work tomorrow! I can't handle that again!

@Doug - Just the chain, the cassette didn't look that bad to me. The bike is 3 years old, coming up on 3000 miles since the chain and cassette was replaced.
@Kelly - I pulled the cable tighter, and readjusted the "Barrel Adjuster"

Gears behaved on my ride today as well as yesterday, I think the key is to make small adjustments and fine tune it. Gear 5 on the back looks to be the most worn, but since that's my cruising gear that doesn't surprise me, it doesn't look worn to the point it should be replaced.

Lubricated the chain after checking for a stiff link as well. While I was tuning it I also adjusted the H and L adjusters to keep from jumping off the top and bottom gears.

Does anyone have special parking for bicycles at their workplace? I work at a large university (MSU) and there is interest amongst some of my workmates in my building for such a thing. Any advice on how to convince the powers-that-be?

What a great month. I decided to try to ride a minimum of 10 miles every day of the month. I've never ridden every day. Well, I completed the month fulfilling my goal today. There were a few days I didn't feel like riding but still got out there. Rode to work 11 times and got 500 miles in doing the Bon Ton Roulet tour in New York. Time to back off a bit now to let my legs rest.

Yet Doug, you are also included on our local page. The Yoopers on the Houghton/Keweenaw county BIKE page do NOT show up on our local page - which I initially thought included all of MI. Is there a process by which a geographical ocality, say SW MI or the Thumb, could set up their own LOCAL page in the bike challenge? The Copper Country did it w/ Houghton & Keweenaw Counties. Does a locality need to organize and be recognized by some authority to set up the zip codes to be associated with their local page? Any LMB members recall seeing such an option? I don't see anything in the FAQ section that discusses this topic.

Or....
Are there only a few localities that have their act together sufficiently to organize a local page - and the LMB is obligated to pick up the remainder - the state's unorganized slackers?
Hmmmmmm
Mark Michaelson Tue Jul 23 00:23:00 2013
Interestingly, I note that our LOCAL page does not include all of Michigan. If you click the state of michigan in the National leaderboard, there are 608 riders, as compared to our 491. If I change my zip code to my old Yooper zip code, the local leaderboard "up there" is limited to Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Their local page is devoid of LMB propaganda - instead replaced by Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE). I had thought Team "AEP" was number 1 in MI, only to find over the weekend that Team "Cross Country Sports" in Calumet was kickin' our butt. Thankfully, Mr Bowman has since entered his July miles and we've left those out-o-work copper miners in the green stampsand dust. Anybody know how the LOCAL regions are established? Does the LMB run the local page and exclude those that don't fly its flag?

Eric Weston Wed Jul 17 12:31:00 2013
Brandon B's experience raises an all too common problem. Often to reach a multi-use trail, where peds and bikes both have equal right to use, a cyclist may by neccessity use a standard sidewalk, which bike techically should not be using. In Lansing, there are MANY places where bike lanes abruptly end, or you can only reach a multi-use trail by sidewalk. In some cases here they designate (on the map) a section of what appears to be a standard sidewalk as part of a trail system. As a result, it confuses everyone, and leads to encounters like Brandon's, with both ped and cyclist feeling they are in the right, and feeling agrieved. Until we get consistent bike routes (clearly marked bike lanes and trails) these encounters will continue. Don't get me started about cars that don't think bikes are allowed on the roads...

Although the objective of this campaign is to promote cycling as a means of transport, any objective analysis of the data would conclude that - even with a spirit of competitiveness injected - less than one percent of any major workforce will use cycling to commute during the prime cycling months.

We ought to hide the # of employees. Hope the infrastructure planners don't see the data.

Brandon that part of trail is still bumpy it gets better the farther south west you get and there is a five guys burger a few miles down. Donald I don't have a smart phone will try the manual way but im not good with computers.
Donald Millikin Wed Jun 19 15:39:00 2013
Brandon B Wed Jun 19 13:27:00 2013
Hey jack, I live in the relative location that you are in. How are the trail conditions on the Paint Creek Trail and the beginning part of the Clinton River trail that starts off from the Onyx Arena? I'm not sure if it is smooth enough on those to bring my Specialized Sirrus Elite. The beginning of the Clinton River Trail that backs up to the Orchard Trail was really bumpy last year...

This corner is a green baseball lot and there is free street parking especially on Trumbull right by the Woodbridge Pub. The ride usually goes for two hours and sometimes part of the group will continue to ride after getting back to the corner of Warren and Trumbull. Definitely bring a light. @ Brian - I recently got a pair of fenders for my bike. I no longer have a mud stripe up my back when I ride in the rain. :) I ride to and from work, rain or shine, but now it's much more pleasant in the rain knowing I'm not going to be completely dirty by the time I get to work.
Brian Peterman Thu May 30 10:45:00 2013
I'm thinking of getting fenders, so wet roads and rain are less of a deterrent.

Scott Hollingshead Fri May 24 16:41:00 2013
So I had my first breakdown of the season today. Rode about six miles then found a new pot hole as I was watching a mini van about to merge onto the road I was on. After the repair was complete, I went back out an put on some more miles. The weather has put a real damper on my riding this week, but I hope to make up for lost time as I am on vacation next week.
Gregg Smith Fri May 24 14:24:00 2013
Hey Michigan riders ... especially those in Southeastern Michigan ... If you don't want to ride but want to help the cause, you could make a donation on behalf of a rider. ; )

Russell, glad to have you join in the challenge. Bet that you will be back up in the top 10% this year too.

In 2013 we are happy to add Program to Educate All Cyclists (PEAC) as an official Advocacy Day host organization and to continue working with our friends at MSU Bikesto kick off the event in style with a morning bike rally to the State Capitol.

Whether you enjoy riding on Michigan roads, trails or dirt single track, Advocacy Day is your opportunity to speak with one voice to help advance Michigan bicycling and the interests of cyclists of all abilities across across the state. We hope that casual riders and die-hards alike will join us in communicating the great importance of bicycling to the Michigan Legislator.

Endo's auto-pause failed to restart on my club ride last night, effectively knocking 8 miles off of my ride - I've editted it to the correct mileage and time and doing so gave me a little more cushion for first place overall in Michigan. We have a tight race for that so I wanted to drop a note. Please feel free to check my workouts, the mileage I entered is consistent and honest with the same ride I've done every other Tuesday all season long.

As we approach the end of the Challenge, I'm happy to note that we've driven our car about 1000 miles less than the summer of 2011. That's a savings of about 175.00 worth of gas and lots of extra calories burned (I am about 10 lbs lighter than a year ago) win-win-win

Will pass 2500 points with Tuesday's commute and ride. Will also exceed 900 miles for the summer this week (counting miles ridden in April before NBC started. Won't reach goal of 1500 miles this year (again), but will surely exceed 1000. Once September arrives, weather and less daylight hours will curtail riding opportunities. Feeling much stronger/faster on the bike. Rode 15 miles in 56:44 minutes couple days ago, which had to be a personal best. Averaged over 16 mph until last 10 minutes for cool down. Probably not fast for some, but, a personal best for me at 57 yrs old. Thanks everyone, your comments and riding keep me motivated. Keep riding!

OK. Just seams odd that the time for both commutes would be
the EXACT same time to the second. Thats cool. Thanks.
Carlton J Carr Mon Aug 20 12:04:00 2012
@Todd Coffey, Alania is correct. As far as the exact times go, I don't bother checking or entering my time. I only glance at my watch for an estimate of the ride duration. So what you are seeing is the system auto entering the rides and whatever it happened to default to for the time.
Maggi A Sweeney Tue Aug 14 19:24:00 2012
I usually have the same mileage to and from work, but the time varies a bit...
Todd Coffey Sun Aug 12 20:49:00 2012
but with the same exact time??
Alaina Furr Sun Aug 12 14:49:00 2012
What you may be seeing with the double postings are people's work commutes. When I signed up a couple weeks ago, I was asked how long my commute was one-way. The system seems to set up some sort of default based on that, because when I go in to log my miles and choose the "commute" option for the type of mileage, it always automatically shows up as 2 trips of 2.5 miles each, rather than 1 trip of 5 miles.
Todd Coffey Sat Aug 11 19:35:00 2012
Whats with people posting two work outs a day that are the exact same time and miles! With a great program like this they cant stop people from cheating? Your only cheating yourself any ways but it wrecks it for the rest of us who are legitimatley trying to better ourselfs and compair to other people. Come on!
Russell Clubine Sat Aug 4 21:42:00 2012
Great week! First week of over 100 miles. Rode short and hard yesterday, so, after my commute today, took a longer base miles ride for 22+. Rode in between t-storm threats and while I finished, the dark clouds were rolling in with a bit of thunder. Anyway, feel great. T-storms and rain predicted all day tomorrow. If I get the chance to ride it will be a shorter recovery ride. Keep riding everyone. 10 million miles is getting closer!

Totalled a bit over 74 miles this week with only one ride over 20 miles. Commuting every day makes a difference. Tonight's ride burned 1398 calories according to calorie counter on Bycycling.com. Doesn't seem poossible, but, I averaged just over 15 mph. Now that I passed 1500 points, new goal is 2500. 5 weeks to go, keep riding everyone!
Timothy M Walsh Tue Jul 17 21:25:00 2012
Bike feels a lot better with a new chain and cassette. New rear tire as well, maybe I can get a long ride in and not have a flat now
Russell Clubine Sat Jul 14 15:58:00 2012
Yahoo! Broke Platinum level with yesterday's commute! Then worked today, so, commuted today, too. Well over 500 miles so far this summer, but some were in March and April, so, didn't count for NBC. Anyway, goal is still 1000+ for summer. Don't think I'll make 1500. Schedule hasn't allowed for many long rides this summer. Once Sept arrives it gets difficult to ride as much since it gets dark so much earlier. Keep riding everyone, 10 million miles is getting closer every day.

Russell Clubine Fri Jul 6 20:40:00 2012
Michael, congratulations on your first century. Great accomplishment. I've had that goal for past couple of summers, but, have run out of time by September to gain fitness level necessary to do it. I've ridden a couple metric centuries and one 75 mile ride last summer, but no centuries as yet. I hpe to do it this year , but will have to ramp up my mileage. So, congrats, you've earned it. Keep riding everyone!
Michael Lennon Thu Jul 5 08:32:00 2012
Completed my first Century yesterday! The thermometer showed over 100 degrees at the end.

Had fun all morning, then as the temperatures got up the last 18 miles were tough. Learned an important lesson: when your stomach is too upset to drink water and you stop sweating: STOP. Find shade, pour water on your head, and go at a comfortable pace when you are ready. Pouring gatorade on yourself is not as cool as the commercials would have you think.

Russell Clubine Wed Jul 4 19:49:00 2012
T-Sorms on Tuesday prevented any riding. Picked up some holiday hours today at work so, got my commute in for the day. Very, very hot and humid. 95+ degrees. So, didn't ride any more. Still 88 at 8 pm. Will have to ride more the rest of the week when I can get out, perhaps, in the a.m. when it is cooler.

Hopefully later this summer we can camp near there and take the bikes and kayaks.

Great SUMMER day. Sunny, clear, low 90 's. Rode the Little Traverse Wheelway today from Petoskey to Chalevoix and back. I love this rail-trail. Absolutely stunning and picturesque between East Park and downtown Petoskey. Avg spd 14.1 mph, riding time 2:11:32. Curb cuts slow you down for first few miles, otherwise avg speed would have been around 16 mph. Took a riding buddy with me. Great day. Keep on riding!

What a day, Saturday! Beautiful weather and dedication day for new North Eastern State Trail at Onaway. It fruns 70 miles and Joins North Central Trail in Cheboygan to continue to Mackinaw City. Over 200 people showed up to ride and enjoy lunch and thank the many DNR, Trails Council, city, county and government officials responsible for making the trail a reality. Rode 40 miles, more than I should have. Longest ride to date was only 28 miles, so, I was tired. Good week, too.
Timothy M Walsh Sat Jun 23 20:26:00 2012
I agree on the consistency Mark, almost missed today, told the girl's I was to tired to go to a movie, and went over and saw the PALM riders over at Upton, then did 23 miles cause they inspired me
Mark Michaelson Thu Jun 21 19:28:00 2012
Count the goose eggs laid by our forty-some League riders during the month, multiply by 20, and add them up. We don't need more miles or more riders. We need more consistent participation.
Timothy M Walsh Thu Jun 21 14:35:00 2012
Yeah, I did the math as well and concluded that since a point is factored by the population base we were in need of a lot more riders, or needed to do a significantly higher number of miles.
Benjamin D. Jewell Thu Jun 21 05:46:00 2012
Someone could probably put out some spiffy math, but my quick I just woke up and am posting numbers math has Houghton enjoying a natural 4.26 multiplication factor against Niles. They currently have .096% of their community participating while we only have .033%. Take away the registered users who have logged 0 bike miles since May(probably registered with Endomondo for another reason) and its .074 vs .028. Nerf population.
Timothy M Walsh Wed Jun 20 06:25:00 2012

Preaching to the choir Mark, I think ego has more to do with it. People are afraid they will be laughed at for only recording a mile. What we all forget is if you make the time each day for even 1 mile, it will become a habit and before you know it that 1 mile will turn into 2 or 5 or 10 or whatever. They say it only takes 23 times before something becomes a habit after all
Mark Michaelson Tue Jun 19 22:29:00 2012
Houghton.

You have to understand why Houghton is grossly leading the Local Leader Board as a community. I grew up in Houghton. Your average gas station attendant/McD cash register operator is a graduate Math student, or a Chemical Engineering student. He/She has read the scoring rules and understands that the National Bike Challenge is participatory in nature. He gets his ride in every day, and collects his 20 pts plus his miles. It's a simple equation; 20*DD+miles. While I, as a Captain in sunny SW MI continually harp on the team about the goose-eggs they leave on the team weekly report, I tell them, "Give me only a mile a day, but every day." The typical proud response is that I am encouraging that they "game the system" to generate points. It's as though they are trying to put together a winning poker hand, but forgetting that the game is Pinochle. Your Herculean efforts are fine, and I commend and respect your miles, but you can't rack up an additional 20 extra miles for every team member who decides not to ride on any given day. It's a participation-based game kids. Participate - and win. Ride every day. Benton Harbor - Niles has the numbers (50+ riders) needed to catch up with Houghton. We just need to collect our 20 pts each and every day.

Just ride any amount - every single day.

The Apple Cider Century is a great event. I rode it three times back in the mid 90's. That hill of death still haunts me.

Changed my route to make a work lap 11.4 miles. Should put me in good shape for the Apple Cider Century. 2 more planned increases after I get used to the John Beers hill of death.

Cheers!

Regarding cadence, I raised my cadence a few years ago after reading about it in Bicycling Magazine. I target 90 rpm at all times, except hills, and now I regularly average 85-90rpm and it makes a big difference in endurance. Much easier puching the pedals at 90rmp than 60 or 70. Much easier on the knees, too.

Weather cleared today. Rained firday after I comuted to work. Had to catch a ride home. So, only had the commute one way Friday and returned Saturday. Good rain, over an inch. Rained all night too. Quit this morning by 8 am, so riders in Michigan Mountain Mayhem had dry roads after that. Good turnout. Sold out 1500 entrants quickly. I'm curious to see the results. Lots of elite riders from 23 states and 3 countries.

Great day. Sunny, warm. Commuted to work, rode a bit at lunch and had time to get out this evening and ride more. Need to get my weekly mileage up to 75-80 miles. Goal for summer is total of 1500 miles, but missed that goal the last two summers due to one reason or another. Rest o;f the week looks great.

Figured out the Endomondo Android Applicaiton, logged in, turned GPS on, and went for a ride. Tracks your distance, path, time, and logs the trip for you. Neat.

Beautiful day. Commuted to work, then to lunch and rode shortly after work. Rest of the week should be ideal for riding. This weekend is 3rd annual (I think) Michigan Mountain Mayhem. 1500 riders, timed, if desired and over 10,000 feet of climbing. It brings alot of elite riders to N. Michigan. I'm going to try to see some of it.

Sunday was longest ride of year so far. Rained Thursday night, all day Friday, Friday night and nearly all day Saturday. So, sunday was first nice day. I have to get fenders so I can ride when conditions are wet. Building mileage again after winter de-conditioning (and weight gain).

I'll try and get out today. It has rained for three days straight.

Heym what happened to summer/spring? 90 degrees this past weekend, 52 degrees today. Tomorrow will definitely go over 500 points with another commute.
Russell Clubine Tue May 29 22:30:00 2012
Rain and thunderstorms limited riding time over holiday weekend. Back to work today and weather was clear although cooler, high 60's instead of 90 degrees. So, left early for work and rode before work and at lunch. Keep riding everyone, we're nearly at 3 million miles nationally!

Biked after work and thunderstorm held off although getting dark early because of new cloud cover. Road 15 miles in additin to commuting to work! Well worth the ride

Think I'd rather be greeted with a flat then get one on the way to work to be honest

Hey Michiganders! His House Christian Fellowship is having a 50 mile ride (not race) in Midland, on June 2nd. This event is $10 to ride, or you can donate to a rider. The event is called Cycle the Campus (cyclethecampus.org) I'd love to see fellow riders out there!
John Minor Wed May 9 14:28:00 2012
My captain asked how it was going on ! My response was that I was tender 'back there'. He then responds: "GET ON YOUR BIKE AND RIDE" !
Ginnis McGinnis Wed May 9 13:19:00 2012
I just joined today. I love to ride, and plan to ride the Katy Trail late June/July and the Michigander mid-July. Should be an awesome summer. :)

Ride whatever you like Cheryl. And welcome to cycling from another Michiganian.

I am a newbie to riding! Thanks to my generous brother (and lifetime rider) he bought me a beautiful new Townie, although that isnt the bike of choice for uber-serious riders, I love it! I logged in 10 miles over the weekend

Tried to join Fat Bottom Girl's but throwing a server error, go figure. I'm assuming that's the local Cook Nuclear group. Traveling this week to San Francisco, not going to be doing much riding as a result.

Good news, just got my wheel back. Once I get it mounted I can give it a try. Turns out I didn't only bend the axle, I broke it in half, the bearing nut was the only thing holding it together for me.
